The VC secondary market is on fire. But many LPs are rushing in without fully appreciating the risks. VenCap International plc has been active in VC secondaries (LP positions only) since 1987 — and this is one of the hottest markets we’ve seen. In the first half of 2025 we reviewed $6.5bn of secondary VC deals — a 41% jump from the $4.6bn we saw in the same period last year. This includes both GP-led and LP-led deals. Here are 4 lessons we've learned from nearly 40 years of buying secondaries: 1️⃣ Power law still rules – a few companies will drive most returns. 2️⃣ Quality over discount – our best deal was bought at a premium to NAV. 3️⃣ Know the valuation policy – different VCs can value the same company very differently. 4️⃣ Factor in manager behavior – holding winners vs. selling early can make or break returns. VC secondaries ≠ PE secondaries. The risks are different — but for LPs who can access the right deal, at the right price, the rewards can be exceptional.

French pensioners could have been three times wealthier than they are today… if only France had adopted a capitalization-based pension system back in 1982, under President François Mitterrand. (Credit for this analysis goes to a historical exercise by economist and Wharton assistant professor Sylvain Catherine, along with David Le Bris from France’s National Bureau of Economic Research.) Instead, France now faces a looming financial crisis unless it reforms its pension system. And Germany is in the same boat. The situation is worsening as the population ages—fewer young workers are supporting more retirees. The current pay-as-you-go system (“répartition”) leaves pensioners poorer than they could be while placing a crushing tax burden on workers. For every €140 a company pays in salary, a French employee takes home just €74. No wonder businesses hesitate to hire, and young workers who can afford to leave are doing so in droves. This system also stifles the development of pension funds that could be investing in European businesses. As a result, many European entrepreneurs are creating wealth—not for European retirees—but for North American pensioners instead. Many reforms are needed, but this is the most urgent. Without fixing their pension systems, European countries with a full pay-as-you-go model will remain trapped in a vicious cycle. The good news? Awareness is growing, and the conversation is shifting. In France, leaders like David Lisnard and Rafik SMATI are making pension reform a central pillar of their economic programs.
