As a proud United Way of Massachusetts Bay partner, we’re grateful for the efforts to #liveunited so that everyone can thrive.
Five months ago, we began convening government leaders, our nonprofit partners and members of the business community on weekly federal response calls to share information and the impacts of federal actions together in real time. This week, we joined more than 400 colleagues from United Way organizations across the country and took what we've learned on those calls to Washington DC. Our President and CEO Marty Martinez joined United Way Worldwide CEO Angela F. Williams, JD, M.Div to meet with Massachusetts U.S. Senator Ed Markey and advocate to ensure Medicaid and SNAP access, protect funding for Americorps, Head Start and other early childhood programs through the Community Development Block Grants, and expand the Child Care Tax Credit. We also focused our advocacy on the role that 211 can play in this moment – both connecting individuals to local community resources for assistance – but showing the data and trends around expected increased needs in the coming weeks and months – data that Senator Markey and others can use to show their colleagues the impacts of the reconciliation package and other programs and funding at risk. The so called #HELPact introduced in the House and soon-to-be introduced in the Senate would strengthen the 211 system through sustainable funding. As U.S. Senator Cory Booker closed in remarks at one of our sessions today, "When we stand together - when we stand united - there is nothing we can't do."
