I'm on vacation but took a few hours to attend CCS Fundraising's DC AI Summit at the invitation of Kristen (Kris) Kuhns, who in her night job volunteers as President of the AFP DC Chapter Board of Directors. The featured speakers, Ashutosh Nandeshwar, Ph.D. and Allison Willner, teed up thought-provoking discussion on AI's role in nonprofit fundraising that sought to balance optimism with realism. The key insight can’t be expressed enough - AI should amplify human connection rather than replace it, as demonstrated by organizations like Tarjimly, which has helped over 600,000 refugees through AI-powered translation services that connect them with volunteer interpreters who've lived similar journeys. While traditional AI tools like predictive modeling and donor clustering can significantly boost fundraising results, and modern generative AI can streamline operations, we learned that 47% of nonprofits haven't adopted AI yet, with only 10% using predictive capabilities. The main barriers may not be technical but strategic: inconsistent data, lack of AI knowledge, and unclear implementation plans. The most successful approach seems to be falling in love with the problem rather than the solution. The discussion emphasized finding the right balance on the spectrum between authenticity and automation. Where do you draw the line between genuine human interaction and AI-enhanced efficiency? The takeaway that resonated most was this: data strengthens relationships but doesn't replace them, and behind every algorithm is a human heart beating for a cause. As nonprofits navigate budget cuts and increased demands, AI offers a path to do more with less while preserving what matters most in philanthropy - genuine human connection. How is your organization approaching this balance between technological innovation and relationship-centered fundraising? (By the way - while I take full responsibility for this post I was assisted by Claude AI)

Just had the incredible opportunity to explore the Giving in America exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and a behind-the-scenes look at their special collection of historic fundraising materials. As someone who’s spent their career in fundraising, it was both inspiring and humbling to see how the power of giving has shaped our country and how our profession has evolved over time. Huge thanks to the team at the Smithsonian, Jen Newmeyer for the invite, and to David Rubenstein for championing this powerful story of generosity. If you have a passion for philanthropy... definitely check it out! #Fundraising #Philanthropy #GivingInAmerica #Smithsonian #NonprofitLeadership Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP-DC) Washington, DC Metro Area Chapter

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Giving in America philanthropy exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, including a behind-the-scenes look at off-display fundraising objects. Each object has a unique and important story to tell about causes like healthcare, education, and food insecurity. Special thanks to Jen Newmeyer, CFRE for organizing the tour with curator Amanda Moniz and fellow volunteers of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP-DC) Washington, DC Metro Area Chapter. It's so exciting that some of Jen's own objects are now part of the collection. The philanthropy sector makes such a profound impact in society, and after this visit, I'm filled with even more pride to be part of this field! For anyone interested, I recommend visiting the museum to experience the exhibit yourself. #GivinginAmerica #philanthropy #Smithsonian #AFP

A Full-Circle Moment in Black Philanthropy: Welcoming Art Taylor to AADO As we honor Black Philanthropy Month, we reflect on the legacy of Black leadership in our field and the progress that is still unfolding. In 1960, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, then known as the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE), was founded by three visionary leaders. One of them was Bill Simms, a Black man whose presence helped shape the foundation of our profession. Now picture a toddler named Art Taylor just beginning his journey. Fast forward 65 years, and that same little boy has grown into the first Black man to lead AFP as President and CEO. Sadly, Bill Simms passed away last year and didn’t witness this powerful moment. But the vision he helped build made it possible. Art’s appointment is both a celebration of progress and a call to reflect: Why did it take more than six decades for this milestone to arrive? Art brings deep experience and transformative leadership to the role. As head of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, he championed trust, transparency, and ethical governance. He introduced the Accredited Charity Seal, launched the podcast The Heart of Giving, and has mentored future leaders through teaching and public speaking. What makes Art’s leadership truly exceptional, though, is his humility and intentionality. I first met him shortly after his CEO appointment, when he called to formally introduce himself, share ideas, and not only tell me about his vision for AFP but his desire to partner with the African American Development Officers Network (AADO). Art Taylor’s presence at AFP’s helm is a meaningful moment for AADO and for the entire sector. It reflects the values we celebrate during Black Philanthropy Month: representation, community, and progress rooted in legacy. We’re proud to welcome Art to the AADO family and look forward to walking alongside him on this historic path. Herman Art Taylor The AADO Network Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Global)
