Teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and others all have a role in the education of students with disabilities. A persistent shortage of these professionals across the U.S. affects the education system’s ability to adequately serve students with disabilities. In this video, AIR experts Lynn R. Holdheide, Keane Alavi, and Abigail Foley talk about the supports special education professionals need—and the role leaders can play in providing those. #IDEA50 #IDEA #SpecialEducation #TeacherShortage

November 29th is the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (#IDEA). One of its most powerful contributions is the mandate for specially designed instruction (SDI)—individualized, systematic teaching delivered by highly qualified educators. In our Q&A, AIR expert Lindsey Hayes explains why rigorous preparation is essential to fulfilling IDEA’s vision. From adapting instruction and using data-driven decisions to collaborating across settings, preparation programs equip teachers to ensure every child can access and succeed in the general education curriculum. Hayes also explores innovative pathways—like residencies, apprenticeships, and grow-your-own programs—that can address teacher shortages while maintaining quality. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (#IDEA)—a landmark law that opened doors for millions of students with disabilities. IDEA has shaped classrooms, empowered families, and strengthened communities by ensuring every student has the right to a free and appropriate public education. For decades, AIR has worked to improve outcomes for students with disabilities and their families, by conducting federal, state, and local projects and providing training and technical assistance support for implementing IDEA and evidence-based practices. In this video, AIR experts Dena Slanda, Ph.D., Abigail Foley, and Sara Evans share what expanded access means for students, families, and communities. On November 19, AIR—in partnership with the California Department of Education, University of California, Berkeley, and UC San Diego—hosted “From Recovery to Renewal: Advancing Resilience in PK-12 Education.” The event presented findings from research conducted across California about learning recovery and facilitated conversations with panelists and meeting participants about opportunities for the future of TK-12 education. During the Fireside Chat session, AIR's Susan Bowles Therriault, Ed.D. noted, “We have the opportunity to rethink education. Studies show that the way students are thinking has shifted... Whether that is due to technology, screen time, or the pandemic, the reality is that students’ ways of thinking has shifted and we are observing more and more disengagement from the system. So maybe the format of the education system needs to be different, and I think that opportunity is now.” Thank you to everyone who participated! 📸1 (AIR Experts L to R): Varsha Nair, Isabella Saillard, Susan Therriault, Niu Gao, Linda Choi, Jenny Scala 📸2 (L to R): Cheryl Jordan, Ingrid Roberson, Susan Therriault, Howard Blume 📸3 (L to R): Edgar Zazueta, Abigail Slovick, Samantha Chui, Jeff Harris, Bruce Fuller 📸4 (L to R): Darin Brawley, Erin Gabel, Edgar Cabral, Julian Betts
