As America gears up for FIFA World Cup 2026™, Amtrak is working closely with our partners to support the millions of people planning to attend games, fan fests, and other celebrations. Yesterday, Amtrak representatives joined the U.S. Department of Transportation FIFA 2026 World Cup Summit to discuss our preparations for the biggest sporting event on the globe. We appreciated the invitation to join a panel on wayfinding alongside Federal Transit Administration Administrator Marc Molinaro, Los Angeles Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins, and FIFA's Deborah Fales and James Kershaw. Leading up to next summer, we're focused on running a world-class railroad, serving as a trusted partner to peer agencies, and ensuring our stations and infrastructure are ready to accommodate the surge in travel.

The Amtrak Switch Exchange System (SES) Production Construction team recently kicked off preparations for connecting the new Portal North Bridge to the current tracks for future service! As part of their scope, they will be building and installing approximately 3,600 feet of new track and turnouts, which includes more than 7,000 concrete ties and 14,000 feet of new rail. This work, along with the other work associated with the new bridge, will support improved service and reliability of Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT trains in the Garden State and across the Northeast Corridor.

In FY25, Amtrak welcomed 34.5 million riders, a 5.1% increase over the previous year, contributing to all-time records for ridership and revenue. Behind these results is our focused commitment to improving the customer experience and expanding access to modern, sustainable transportation. We increased network capacity by more than 4% this year and launched new services like Amtrak Mardi Gras along the Gulf Coast and Borealis in the Midwest. We also introduced NextGen Acela, ushering in a new era of high-speed rail on the Northeast Corridor. At the same time, we have undertaken projects to modernize stations, bridges, tunnels, and infrastructure, many of which haven’t been updated in more than 100 years. As America’s national passenger rail network, our goal is to provide reliable, comfortable, efficient travel to our customers. With record ridership, record investment, and record progress in 2025, we’re proud to keep building the future of rail travel one journey at a time.

FY25 was a record-breaking year for Amtrak across ridership, revenue, and capital investment. The numbers reflect a clear trend: America is consistently choosing reliable, efficient, and customer-focused passenger rail. With new routes open, new trains in service, and a record $5.5 billion (up nearly 25% year-over-year) invested in modern rail infrastructure projects and state-of-good-repair initiatives, we’re on track to strengthen communities and build a more connected future for our nation. Our Chief Commercial Officer, Eliot Hamlisch, shares his perspective on the momentum behind #NCbyTrain. His recent ride on the Piedmont with NCDOT and state leaders highlights how strong partnerships are driving record ridership, new investments, and a rail renaissance in North Carolina.
In late October, I had the opportunity to hop aboard Amtrak's Piedmont service from Raleigh to Charlotte with members of the @North Carolina Department of Transportation (Julie White and Jason Orthner, P.E., CPM) and NC's Secretary of Administration (Gabriel J. Esparza)—a perfect opportunity to experience firsthand the impact of our collaboration via #NCbyTrain. Amtrak and NCDOT have built a strong partnership that’s delivering record ridership and investing in modernization to enhance the passenger experience. Together, we’re driving a rail renaissance in North Carolina with: 🚄 New equipment and infrastructure improvements 🛤️ Expansion projects that will serve to reduce travel times and boost connectivity 🏭 A new Siemens Mobility plant in Lexington, NC, building our next-generation Airo fleet State-supported services like #NCbyTrain are essential to Amtrak’s mission—connecting communities within the “sweet spot” of too far to drive, too short to fly. In FY24, these routes account for roughly half of Amtrak’s total ridership nationwide. The future of rail in North Carolina is bright, and I’m proud to see the momentum firsthand! #RailRenaissance #PassengerRail #Innovation #Transportation #Partnership #Expansion #CustomerExperience

These groundbreakings bring us one step closer to introducing Amtrak’s new state-of-the-art Airo trainsets on the Northeast Corridor in 2027 and Amtrak Downeaster in 2030. This investment will help transform the customer experience, improve reliability, and enable more efficient maintenance practices for decades to come. Thanks to U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, Maryland Department of Transportation, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), MassDOT, NNEPRA, MBTA, Rail Passengers Association, Clark Construction Group, Herzog, SPS New England, Inc., and Railroad Construction Company, Inc. for joining us and supporting these projects.
