Victory for kids with food allergies in New York City! The New York City Council passed Int. 895 unanimously today. This ordinance will require all NYC schools and childcare programs to stock epinephrine. AAFA and KFA congratulate the Elijah-Alavi Foundation Inc. Foundation and Thomas Silvera, MSHS-PH , CST, (DHSc Candidate) for their work on this enormous win that will strengthen protections for children across the city. We testified to share our support earlier this year. Thank you to Councilwoman Julie Menin who introduced this ordinance.

Many products claim to be “hypoallergenic” or “allergy free.” But there are no federal regulations on using those terms. People with asthma and allergies need products and services backed by science, not marketing. The Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program is based on science. Products are tested at independent labs against strict scientific standards. Certified products are proven to be better suited for people with asthma and allergies. The Senate has officially passed the Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act. This is a major step toward safer schools for the 4 million children in the U.S. with food allergies. Passed as an amendment to the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, this bipartisan legislation from Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Deb Fischer will ensure that school food service staff receive required training to prevent, identify, and respond to food-related allergic reactions. This training can save lives, especially since more than 15% of school-aged children with food allergies experience an allergic reaction while at school. AAFA is proud to have worked with Sens. Durbin and Fischer and our partners across the allergy and pediatrics community to move this bill forward. Thank you to our advocates who took action! Your voices helped make this Senate victory possible. Stay tuned for next steps as the bill heads to the House. #FoodAllergy #AllergyAdvocacy

Great news! New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation requiring allergen labeling for pre-packaged foods. This means sandwiches, soups, salads, and other pre-packaged foods sold at grocery stores, cafeterias, and delis and more will include labels for the most common allergens. AAFA supported this legislation by submitting a joint letter to legislators. We appreciate the lawmakers and local advocates who led the effort and Gov. Hochul for signing it into law. Congratulations to all the advocates who made this historic bill happen. Thank you to youth advocate Jared Saiontz, whose leadership helped inspire this bill. AAFA also congratulates dedicated advocates including Stacey Saiontz, Jill Mindlin, Toni Taylor and Jon Terry of Allergy Advocates NY, Georgina Cornago of The Love for Giovanni Foundation, and Thomas Silvera of Elijah-Alavi Foundation Inc. for their ongoing commitment to this bill effort. We are also grateful to the many organizations across the food allergy community that joined AAFA's joint letter to New York legislators. Signatories included the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; AllergyStrong; Addie Tells All; CURED; the Elijah-Alavi Foundation; Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team (FAACT); the International FPIES Association; The No Nut Traveler; the Natalie Giorgi Sunshine Foundation; MenuTrinfo; Nut Free Wok; and Snack Safely. State legislation offers a powerful opportunity to make a direct impact in your community. If you are interested in getting involved in future state advocacy efforts, we would love to hear from you! #FoodAllergy #Advocacy #NewYork
