About us
Blockchain For Impact (BFI) is a catalyst funder from the global blockchain industry that, in coordination with fellow partners, strives to forge multi-sectoral collaborations that deliver long-term and equitable preparedness mechanisms to address India’s overstretched and under-resourced healthcare infrastructure and help marginalized and vulnerable communities. Founded by Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon (aka Matic), who brought together a community of innovators to help the people of India tackle the Covid-19 health crisis, BFI takes over the baton from the CryptoRelief fund initiative, with a mission to create transformational change in the health infrastructure, leveraging skills, technology, organizational network, and funds alongside like-minded partners to support the public health system - now and in the future. The next big focus is to promote community health with a national alliance for public health preparedness (or pandemic preparedness); help create a multi-sectoral collaborative virtual alliance in the biomedical field, set up a state-of-the-art Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation, and strengthen the health systems across multiple districts in India in partnership with civil society, development organizations, state and central government with the India District Full Stack Fund.

You Need Only One Piece of Work to Win a Nobel Prize. The problem in academia lies in the metrics that are chosen. The issue is not that people chase metrics; people will always chase whatever targets are set. The real risk is in choosing the wrong ones, because the wrong metrics push everyone in the wrong direction. The scientific community in some parts of the world has recognised this issue and taken corrective steps. A few years ago in the UK, the research assessment process stopped asking departments for long lists of publications. Instead, researchers were asked to submit only two or three of their most impactful contributions. Longer lists could still be provided, but evaluators made it clear that they did not matter. This simple shift immediately changed the incentives. It all comes down to what is measured. Consider the Nobel Prizes. As one Cambridge researcher put it: “People can do whatever they want. It takes only one piece of work to win a Nobel Prize.” In fact, one of this year’s Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine isn’t a prolific publisher. Yet a single transformative discovery was enough. That’s the nature of breakthroughs; they cannot be predicted upfront. They emerge from a broad base of exploration where one exceptional idea eventually rises to the top. This is why managing science is a lot like managing an investment portfolio. A wide pool of ideas is essential because no one knows in advance which one will become revolutionary. The same principle applies to technology. Predicting winners early is nearly impossible. Ideas need room to grow, many will fade, and only a few will take off. The challenge and the opportunity lies in creating the conditions for that emergence. -Dr. Premnath Venugopalan In the second episode of science.unblocked, Dr Gaurav Singh, Dr Nikhil Agarwal, and Dr Premnath Venugopalan discuss various aspects of how to convert research into a startup. “What are the career options after a startup fails?” This question came up in Episode 2 of science.unblocked when Dr. Gaurav asked about life after a failed venture. Dr. Nikhil Agarwal shared a powerful perspective: Many founders who shut down their startups still receive funding again from the same investors because their intent, effort, and integrity were undeniable. Large companies also reach out to him specifically looking to hire former founders because they know these individuals are battle-tested, resilient, and deeply responsible. The takeaway: Failure isn’t the end of the road. It often opens unexpected doors, whether it is new funding, leadership roles, or opportunities to build again.
