Leaders emerging from everywhere, empowered to excel anywhere. Join us as we put education to work for college students.
About us
Braven empowers promising young people on their path to college graduation and strong first jobs. We believe that our next generation of leaders will emerge from everywhere, so we take a particular interest in ensuring our talent network is filled with people from underrepresented backgrounds. To do so, Braven partners with educational institutions, volunteer professionals, and employers to offer a rigorous and relevant career readiness course, that is followed by robust campus-based alumni programming. The course is targeted as a part of the sophomore or transfer junior experience. Through The Braven Accelerator, a hybrid online and in-person course, Braven Fellows will get: --Skills: learn the hard and soft skills companies and organizations want and practice them in mock professional settings. --Experience: apply skills to solve real-world challenges with a cohort of peers. --Coaching: receive small group and one-on-one coaching from a local young professional to achieve personal and professional goals. --Networking: expand one’s circle of champions to include motivated peers, supportive adults, and respected thought-leaders. The Braven Accelerator is principally facilitated by volunteer Leadership Coaches who come from all walks of life and all believe that our nation is better off when a person’s starting point does not limit their opportunities. Leadership Coaches guide our nation’s future leaders through this meaningful experience. At the same time, they develop and practice leadership and management skills that accelerate their own careers. They also develop their own network and deepen their connection to the community in which they live and/or work. This unique, high-impact volunteer opportunity employs a primarily virtual coaching model. From The Braven Accelerator will come a generation of leaders as diverse as our future demands.

One of the things I love most about August is the collective power of Black Philanthropy Month. It’s a joyful reminder of something I’ve always known: giving is in our DNA. We come from a tradition of communal care, of pouring into one another when systems won’t. We give with our hearts, our hands, our voices, and our wallets. And we’ve been doing it forever–long before philanthropy was formalized. That’s why I’m such a fan of the work lead by my Aggie sister Ebonie Johnson Cooper for YOUNG BLACK & GIVING BACK INSTITUTE and their annual campaign, Give 8/28. It’s a national day of giving to support Black-led nonprofits, and it’s intentionally held on August 28–a day deeply woven into our collective history: the March on Washington in 1963, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Barak Obama's nomination in 2008. A day of resistance, hope, resilience, and purpose. This movement isn’t solely big checks (though those are necessary and welcome!). It’s about showing up. It’s about seeing us, believing in us, and investing in the people and organizations doing the work—often with limited resources, always with unmatched heart. And as we welcome students back to campus at Delaware State University today, I’m especially thinking about the long game. The ways we plant seeds—not just for today, but for the future. When we give to Black-led orgs, when we fund students’ dreams, when we mentor, sponsor, and advocate—we’re not just filling a gap. We’re building legacy. 🖤 So this week, I’m challenging my community: → Find a Black-led nonprofit that speaks to your spirit. → Make a donation—small or big, one-time or monthly. → Share their work. Talk about it. Celebrate it. #philanthropy #blackphilanthropymonth #give828 #aggiepride #dsuhornets #Braven

When I think of #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, I immediately think of Liz Thompson. For the past seven years, Liz has been such a gift to Braven as a member of our Chicago board. She leads with such love, boldness, and optimism! Liz, thank you for creating a space where stories are honored, friendships are cherished, and every person who engages with you feels seen and valued. Your work is a beautiful reflection of how The CAFE Group and Cleveland Avenue are dedicated to uplifting people and honoring those who have paved the way. We are so grateful for your partnership and example.

August is Black Philanthropy Month—a time to celebrate the long legacy of generosity in Black communities and shine a light on the individuals, institutions, and ideas moving that legacy forward. I’m still thinking about this year’s HBCU Philanthropy Symposium and the clear message it sent: when HBCUs and mission-driven partners work together, students gain real support for what comes next. One moment that stood out was the session with Braven’s CEO, Aimée Eubanks Davis, and Delaware State University President Dr. Tony Allen. They shared how our partnership is helping DSU students graduate not just with a degree, but with the tools to start strong careers—skills, networks, confidence, and experience. It was a reminder that career readiness is built intentionally. That our generosity includes access to our social capital/network, and can have impact that outlasts a singular financial contribution. Thanks to the organizers Dr. Vita Pickrum, CFRE, LaShawne Pryor, Ed.D, Pia Z. Stokes, MBA, MHR, RP for making space for this conversation, and to everyone working to ensure HBCUs financially thrive and that HBCU graduates have access to real opportunities and equitable income after graduation. #blackphilanthropymonth #Braven #HBCUPhilanthropy #DelawareStateUniversity #HBCUs #CareerPathways #EconomicMobility #HigherEd
