Huge thanks again to Supplies for Success for helping to set up our young scholars for the first day of school and the school year ahead. Last week, 113 backpacks made their way into the little hands of Park House residents, ensuring that kids have everything they need to start the school year off right.

About us
Breaking Ground’s success in ending homelessness is built on a housing model that serves individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. For the chronically homeless, we create safe, secure housing, with essential on-site support services to help them address the psychosocial, mental, and physical health problems that are obstacles to independent living. For individuals who find themselves at the edge of homelessness, our affordable housing provides an all-important safety net. Today, Breaking Ground operates nearly 4,000 units of housing across New York City, along with housing in upstate New York and Connecticut. Supportive housing - affordable housing paired with wraparound services designed to help people maintain their homes for the long-term - is widely recognized as a proven and cost-effective solution to chronic homelessness. But we didn't stop at providing housing. Breaking Ground's programs and services help people experiencing street homelessness - especially those who have been on the streets the longest - to come indoors. Through our Street to Home outreach program and transitional housing resources, we help people get, and stay, on the path to a permanent home.

What a great time celebrating the end of summer with tenants at the Domenech and Redwood Senior Living along with amazing volunteers from our friends Gotham Organization! The Breaking Ground Tenant360 team is always cooking up events for tenants and going the extra mile to ensure that volunteers have a great experience and help us make a meaningful difference in the lives of the vulnerable individuals we serve. And with the great late-summer weather, everyone got to enjoy a little bit of sun along with the delicious eats. Stay tuned for more great events coming up this fall.

This year marks 35 years of Breaking Ground, and to celebrate we are looking back on some defining moments. For #BG35 this month we take a look at our largest newly constructed development to date. Park House and Webster Supportive, in the Tremont section of the Bronx, marked a series of firsts for the organization. Park House was built with the goal of providing 248 low-income families with a solid foundation of affordable housing - a home to live, grow, and thrive in the city. And Webster Supportive, its sister building next door, provides 170 micro studio apartments for formerly homeless and special needs individuals and low-income adults. Designed by the renowned COOKFOX Architects, the complex echoes the vernacular of the solid brick buildings that define the neighborhood, giving a sense of permanence. The buildings are connected by a shared courtyard that cleverly masks required parking. The site also serves as home to our Scatter Site supportive housing program offices, co-locating another vital mission-driven program helping people exit homelessness and find stability in housing.

Thanks to our great partners at Supplies for Success, young learners across our housing portfolio are receiving backpacks and supplies ahead of the new school year. We kicked off the distribution last week at Edwin’s Place in Brooklyn. We are so grateful for community partnerships that help uplift kids in our supportive and affordable housing. The smiles say it all!

Team Breaking Ground is taking shape for the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon! As members of the Breaking Ground Junior Board begin lacing up and hitting the pavement for their training runs, we’ll highlight one runner each month as the race approaches. First up: Melanie Zaraska. "This challenge is about more than just endurance. Breaking Ground meets people where they are and helps them find not just housing, but stability, dignity, and a fresh start. Their compassionate, long-term approach truly transforms lives, and I’m honored to run on their behalf. Every mile I run is a step toward building a stronger, more supportive New York for everyone!" Yesterday, the tenants of the Times Square were joined by a volunteer from Wells Fargo to discuss financial literacy. Our residents got a crash course in how to spend and save smart, from discussing monthly spending plans to debunking some common misconceptions. Thank you to the amazing Tenant 360 Team and Wells Fargo!

This year marks 35 years of #BreakingGround, and the next installment of our monthly #BG35 series focuses on our Boston Road residence in the Bronx. In 2011, the New York State Medicaid Redesign Team was assembled to recommend changes that would reduce the growth in Medicaid spending and improve health outcomes for Medicaid members. A key goal was the role of housing in improving health for people with high utilization rates who also had long histories of homelessness or experiences in institutional settings. Breaking Ground was among the first to utilize Medicaid Redesign Team funding to develop permanent supportive housing at Boston Road in 2015. The building provides 154 units of permanent supportive and affordable housing, with the supportive units focusing on older adults who have high Medicaid utilization rates. The goal is to reduce long-term healthcare costs through the provision of affordable housing paired with onsite supportive services. Designed by Alexander Gorlin Architects, Boston Road was awarded a 2016 AIA New York Award of Merit for New Construction and the 2017 NYCxDESIGN Award for Low-Income Multi-unit Residential Building. #WeAreBreakingGround #SupportiveHousing #AffordableHousing #HousingIsHealth #EndHomelessness
