A whole life carbon software platform making climate action effortless for building professionals.

About us

C.Scale is a software platform enabling architects and building owners to make data-driven decisions throughout the design process, driving down both costs and whole life carbon emissions. Leveraging data on thousands of buildings in planning and design, the platform connects supply and demand for high-performance, low-carbon products in the fragmented, $1 trillion building materials market. C.Scale's AI/ML-powered platform that solves a critical supply chain inefficiency: connecting building product manufacturers directly with designers at the point of specification. As regulation and owners seeking higher performance buildings drive demand for low-carbon products, C.Scale enables architects to make streamlined, data-driven design and procurement decisions while helping manufacturers reach qualified buyers. C.Scale utilizes building life cycle assessment to give a holistic description of a building’s materials, systems, and environmental impacts. The company’s unique AI/ML toolkit gives designers and owners the ability to evaluate the impacts of their decisions from the very beginning of the project. For manufacturers, the platform will offer a flow of high-quality leads by tracking detailed material quantities and carbon performance requirements from the earliest project phases, while providing visibility into the design process from concept through construction. In the past six months, hundreds of enterprise customers have modeled over 1,200 projects representing more than 120 million square feet of construction in C.Scale. These customers include 2 of the top 3 largest architecture firms in North America and 9 AIA Firm Award recipients. Global corporations, including Autodesk and Schneider Electric, are integrating C.Scale into their products and platforms. And Stanford University is piloting the platform to align building planning and procurement with long-term campus commitments.

I love this example of efficiency before optimization. And, plus, what a spectacularly fun looking construction site to take a 5-year old to. Big plastic balls! In C.Scale we daylight structural efficiency at the concept stage through a metric called SMQi (Structural Material Quantity Intensity), which measures the mass of structural materials per unit floor area in a building. People often ask for tangible examples -- thanks KPMB Architects for creating this masterful case study!

Last month, photographer Salina Kassam documented the ongoing construction of CAMH’s Temerty Discovery Centre in Toronto — and what she captured will one day be hidden from view: recycled plastic bubbles encased in rebar. The bubbles are an efficient method of reducing the embodied carbon of concrete slabs. They form voids that eliminate unnecessary concrete in areas of low stress, all without compromising strength. They also reduce dead load, enabling the rest of the structure to require less material.  While the project team, including Blackwell and PCL Construction, went to great lengths to reduce the volume of concrete used in the Temerty Discovery Centre, the building also incorporates significant amounts of Canadian cross-laminated timber. In fact, it’s the first building in the world to combine bubble deck and mass timber construction. Designed by KPMB with Treanor, the Temerty Discovery Centre is targeting LEED Platinum certification and is expected to rank among the globe’s most sustainable research facilities when completed in 2027. Its hybrid construction system demonstrates how reducing embodied carbon not only requires new sustainable materials, but greater efficiency when using the most ubiquitous material of all: concrete.

My thoughts on why so many Tech Layoffs are happening now. We keep hearing that AI is automating jobs out of existence, but that’s only half the story. In reality, what we are seeing is the aftermath of massive capital investment. Over the past couple of years, tech giants have poured billions into AI infrastructure GPUs, data centers, training clusters, all of it. That’s serious capital. And when you spend that much, you still have to show growth and profitability every quarter. The result? A brutal round of internal reprioritization. Only “cash cow” products and high-ROI bets are being kept alive. The nice-to-have or long-horizon projects are being quietly shelved. And when those projects go, so do the teams behind them. These rounds of layoffs isn’t just about automation. The cost of chasing AI innovation has to come from somewhere.

So excited to announce that OPAL Architecture was awarded first prize in the Contemporary category in The Passive House Network and Passive House California California Rebuilds design competition. Thank you AIA Los Angeles for hosting the awards in your beautiful new space and ROCKWOOL Group for sponsoring! This design competition was a unique moment, emerging from a tragedy, to illustrate how broadly applicable the simple principles of Passive House can be in improving human ecology, particularly in a time of extreme weather and emergencies of all types. Turns out prioritizing denser and continuously sealed envelopes improve performance in fire and all sorts of passive survivability conditions (this is not just for energy saving, folks!). Our design revolved around a simple, regular mass-timber all panel encapsulated by non-combustible bio-based site applied finish framing exterior space and creating an armature to support low-mass, totally demountable and reconstructable shading structures. These light structures housed space for battery storage and back-power outlet for an EV so the house can maintain occupancy for longer in emergency events. While this is system is tuned for fire threat, these resiliency measures are portable anywhere - during climate change, we all need survivable resilient solutions! Ever the holistic human ecologists, we included a zero-scape landscape, and habitat enhancing non-human design choices. As part of the competition, we had to submit a PHPP energy model, which yielded heating and cooling loads both at 2 kBTU/sf/yr along with a Passive House Plus primary energy load. Going further, the bio-based framing system paired with recyclable steel exterior structures, low-volume refrigerant heating and cooling system yield a very low whole life emissions impact. We utilized the revolutionary C.Scale early-phase wbLCA tool (EVERYONE, please use this!). As almost always, Passive House approach is the pathway to resourceful, climate-appropriate design for RIGHT NOW, and great design that embraces the our ecological condition will make the revolution irresistible. #passivehouse #greendesign #sustainabledesign #masstimber #lca #passivhaus Passive House Institute | iPHA
