Last week, CRWP had the pleasure of hosting a field trip as part of the Land Trust Alliance's annual conference held in Cleveland! Our field trip showcased the Chagrin River Watershed to an international audience and included activities such as touring land protection and river restoration sites, learning about our region’s New England influence as part of the Western Reserve, enjoying a demonstration by the Chagrin Valley Beagles at WRLC’s headquarters, and watching a native fish collection demonstration in the Chagrin River. We co-led this tour with our land trust partners Western Reserve Land Conservancy and Gates Mills Land Conservancy and we’d also like to thank other partners who helped us show off our scenic river to our tour guests: Village of Gates Mills, The City of Willoughby, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Regional Partnership for Healthy Watersheds
About us
CRWP was formed by 16 cities, villages, townships, counties, and park districts in 1996 in response to increasing concerns about flooding, erosion, and water quality problems. Today CRWP’s 36 members represent 90% of the land area in the watershed. CRWP provides technical assistance to members and develops cost effective solutions to minimize new, and address current water quality and quantity problems. CRWP’s founding principles are: - Natural systems provide flood control, erosion control, and water quality protection services that should be maintained as land is developed. - It is more cost effective for local governments to take planning and development steps to maintain these services than to pay for costly, and generally less effective, remedial solutions. CRWP delivers beneficial services to local decision makers in the context of a watershed approach. CRWP supports these services with on-going studies of watershed functions, and shares and collaborates with organizations and communities facing similar issues statewide. CRWP is funded by annual dues payments from member communities, foundation grants, and grants from State and Federal agencies. Member dues are based on the amount of land in the watershed and the assessed value of the community. Since its formation, CRWP has worked closely with members in developing strategies to address flooding, erosion and water quality problems.

Carmel Landscapes has partnered with us to help us further our mission of protecting, restoring, and preserving the health of our watersheds and Lake Erie. Their expertise in sustainable landscape installation, native plants, and stormwater management—and their generosity in volunteering their time—were invaluable in making a recent Master Rain Gardener installation at Madison Middle School a success. In our recent installation, we created a 350 sq. ft. rain garden featuring 71 native plants. These deep-rooted plants help stabilize the soil, absorb stormwater, and provide essential habitat for native pollinators and wildlife. This rain garden is expected to prevent approximately 17,141 gallons of stormwater runoff from entering local waterways each year—helping to protect water quality throughout the Lake Erie watershed. Thank you, Carmel Landscapes, for supporting CRWP’s mission for healthy streams and Lake Erie. You are a Lake Erie Champion! #crwp #carmellandscapes #MasterRainGardener #Gardening #RainGarden #stormwatermanagement #sustainable #sustainability #Cleveland #conservation #watershed #Ohio #greeninfrastructure #northeastohio #Landscaping #GreenJobs #environment #nature #Lake #LakeErie #pollinators #nativeplants #restoration

Meadville Land Service has partnered with us to help us further our mission of protecting, restoring, and preserving the health of our watersheds and Lake Erie. Their expertise in stream restoration, wetland construction, stormwater management, and native planting has been invaluable in making many of our projects a success. In partnership with the Village of Hunting Valley, private landowners, and an Ohio EPA Section 319(h) grant, and with support and expertise from Meadville Land Service and Biohabitats, CRWP was able to stabilize 500 linear feet of streambank and restore 1 acre of riparian forest on the mainstem of the Chagrin River in the Village of Hunting Valley. This project is estimated to prevent approximately 207 tons of sediment, 413 pounds of nitrogen, and 207 pounds of phosphorous from entering the Chagrin River annually. Thank you, Meadville Land Service, for continuing to support healthy streams and Lake Erie and for being a Lake Erie Champion! #crwp #meadvillelandservice #chagrinriver #protect #preserve #conservation #restoration #Cleveland #huntingvalley #ohioepa #watershed #Ohio #northeastohio #LakeErie
