New research published in Pediatrics shows how standardized clinical prediction rules can reduce variation in CT use after minor pediatric trauma. In a multicenter study, with leadership from our chief academic officer, Dr. Nathan Kuppermann including more than 23,000 children, researchers found that when clinicians used PECARN decision support, CT use was largely consistent across racial and ethnic groups. The findings reinforce how evidence based tools can help protect children from unnecessary radiation and support equitable care in fast paced emergency settings. New research from Children’s National and partners sheds light on how COVID-19 variants affected children with tracheostomy, one of the most medically complex pediatric populations. In a multicenter study spanning alpha, delta and omicron, most children required increased respiratory support across all variants, with delta linked to greater inflammation and steroid use. While omicron was generally milder, risk remained high and vaccination rates were unexpectedly low. These findings highlight the ongoing vulnerability of children with tracheostomy and the need for stronger prevention and support strategies for families navigating complex respiratory care. A recent NBC News story follows Wedam, a teenager living with sickle cell disease, as he undergoes a groundbreaking gene-editing treatment at our hospital—an approach that could help transform care for patients around the world. NBC News' Yamiche Alcindor met with Wedam and Dr. Henna Butt, bone marrow and transplantation fellow, about the intensive process and what the future looks like. “He’s not needing transfusion support because his genetically modified bone marrow is now making his red blood cells,” said Dr. Henna Butt.
