The State of Our City is Strong During Mayor Dyer’s State of the City address today, we continued the celebration of the City of Orlando’s 150th anniversary. The event was held at the historic Plaza Live, which now serves as a hub for arts and culture. As Mayor Dyer helped the community continue to recognize Orlando’s past, he focused on the city’s unwavering commitment to core municipal services, upcoming investments in infrastructure and housing and a focus on innovation, all in a fiscally responsible manner. “The Orlando we love today didn’t happen by accident,” he said. “It’s the result of decades of listening to what residents want, thoughtful planning for the future and embracing bold ideas through leveraging partnership and collaboration. It is harnessing the power of reinvention, decade after decade, that’s paved the way for us to become the place where everyone’s choosing to visit, choosing to invest and choosing to live.” Mayor Dyer commended members of our City team – from the first responders to staff from every department – who deliver services, programs and amenities that residents and businesses rely on each day. He shared upcoming investments that will help them best serve the city, as well as future projects – like fire stations, parks and infrastructure improvements – that will ensure a great quality of life for residents for the next 150 years and beyond. His speech also recognized the need for nearly 10,000 housing units in the city to meet current demand. Mayor Dyer outlined steps to support the addition of new units through the Orlando Unlocked initiative, where the city is continuing to modernize land use and zoning to allow more density, streamline development and encourage mixed-use buildings. He also touched how the city is keeping innovation at the forefront, including being on schedule to meet its 100 percent clean energy goal for municipal operations by 2027, three years ahead of schedule.
