Today is World Kindness Day! Meet Cinnamon Acord, Product Owner on the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) team. Cinnamon joined Costco in March 1997. A Northern California native, Cinnamon married the boy next door, 28 years strong and she’s a proud mom of two and grandma to one adorable little guy. She started her Costco career with a humorous note: “I’ve been with Costco since dinosaurs roamed the earth, working in nearly every department.” In 2007, she made the leap to the corporate office and has since “collected job titles like Pokémon.” Her experience spans the call center, traffic department, IT Service Desk training, employee development, data analytics, and now enterprise content management. “If there’s a hat to wear, I’ve probably worn it and maybe bedazzled it.” We asked Cinnamon what the word kindness means to her. She shared, “Kindness is a quiet superpower. It’s holding the door, giving grace, saying ‘thank you’ like it matters. Small acts, big impact. It’s radical because it’s simple. It doesn’t ask for perfection, praise, or payback. It just wonders: "Can I make this moment gentler, lighter, better for someone else?” She reflected on some of the kindest acts she’s witnessed: “I’ve seen teachers who quietly buy supplies or lunches for students in need, even if they’re not in their class, never letting anyone know. It reminded me that kindness doesn’t require a long history; it just requires noticing. When I was brand new at Costco, a seasoned coworker saw I was overwhelmed and quietly stepped in to help without making me feel embarrassed. That simple act of ‘I’ve got you’ stuck with me and shaped how I try to support others. Some of the kindest acts are the quiet everyday moments. Kindness doesn’t always make headlines, but it’s everywhere if you look for it!” Cinnamon also shares that someone who has greatly influenced her is Mister Rogers. “His belief that everyone deserves love ‘just the way they are’ still guides me. Also, first responders, proof that strength and compassion can walk hand in hand. It reminded me that healing is possible and that we’re never alone. These influences have shaped how I try to show up in the world with empathy, resilience, and a belief in the power of kindness.” We need more people like you, Cinnamon! Happy World Kindness Day! #Costco #CostcoIT #Worldkindnessday

  • (Part 2) Raymond was born and raised in Bothell, WA, and joined the Navy at 17. In fall 1990, he was called to active duty for Gulf War readiness. “I remember writing my first ‘Last Will and Testament’ through the Navy J.A.G. at age 19.” “I served in a Combat Zone Hospital (Fleet Hospital 15)  in Northeastern Saudi Arabia in support of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and Coalition Forces. We treated combat wounded military personnel and occasionally, civilians who were caught in the middle of the fighting or anti-personnel mine explosions.  We treated a number of suspected chemical or biological weapon exposure cases. When combat operations began to wind down, I was assigned to help with Hospital Security.” After returning from the Gulf War, Raymond went back to school, earning a BA in Organization Management and an MBA, which led him into the IT field and eventually to Costco in 2013. He served with the Washington State Guard from 2013 to 2021, earning his Officer’s Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry. He later served as Executive Officer and eventually Commander of a Medical and Support unit based in Olympia. “In October 2019, I had the opportunity to do something which, quite honestly, scared the heck out of me but it was also a life-changing experience: Earning my State Defense Force Parachute Jump Wings. In 2024, I returned to the Jump School to support and mentor my former Lieutenant who earned his Jump Wings. I also had the privilege of meeting Veterans of  “22 Mohawks” who  trained and parachuted together.” How does Raymond's Military experience translate to what he does now? “I learned a great deal about planning, coordinating, executive leadership, emergency management and organizational stewardship, especially as a leader responsible for a military organization. Unlike the commonly perceived ‘command & control’ traditional military model of leadership, our troops served distinctly as volunteers. In other words, I earned the trust and support of my troops in order for us to accomplish missions we were tasked with. I see many examples throughout the years here at Costco where earning trust to lead and imparting cultural mentorship takes time, since a leader must also “live” the example, to earn their trust and to adapt to the culture. This is critical to ensure future leaders mentor others within organizational culture to carry the ‘Costco Guidon’ forward.  Thank you, Raymond, for your dedicated service to our country and your ongoing contributions to Costco IT. Please join us in expressing gratitude to him and all our veterans, active duty, and reserves this Veterans Day. 2nd Image: Top Left: Ray - Combat Operating Room - Surgery on battle wounded. (Part 1) Today,  November 11th, and we honor our Costco Veterans. Meet Ray O. Raymond Orien, IT Analyst 3 on the IT Service Continuity team. He served in the Navy Reserve Hospital Corps from 1988-1996 and the Washington State Guard from 2013-2021. Raymond joined Costco in August 2013 after hearing a rumor from his local Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery chapter that Costco IT was hiring. Within a month, he applied and was hired onto the Disaster Recovery team. “I was extremely fortunate. Back then, it was rare to be hired from the ‘outside’. Costco opened the door to many growth opportunities, relationships, mentors, and friends. A retired Costco military Veteran took me under his wing to mentor me and help me adapt to the ‘Costco Way,’ as well as support other Veterans working here and being part of the Costco Veterans Group.” We asked Raymond what Veterans Day means to him and he said, “It is a day of reflection and being a part of the Veterans support community, to reach out to other Veterans ( “Buddy Check”). I have seen first-hand what service and sacrifice means, especially during a war. Veterans Day is a day where I quietly reflect on the service and sacrifice made by so many. Military service affects everyone who puts on the uniform, and it impacts families who bear the uncertainty in their absence when a loved one is away from home. I am proud to have served, and to have had the honor of meeting and helping so many Veterans throughout Costco and so many supporters throughout. 1st Image:  Top Photo: Ray age 17, Navy Basic Training Bottom Photo: Ray with wife of 34 years Bottom Photo: Ray and his wife Adele enjoying 34 years together. #Costco #CostcoIT #Veteransday

  • This year, following our Diwali celebration on October 20th, we caught up with Gracy Ahuja from our Data Science Team to hear how she brought Diwali to life at work. Gracy loved sharing her traditions with everyone, saying it felt "wonderful to be able to share a piece of my culture and traditions with my friends, colleagues, and leaders.” Her favorite part? The amazing performances and energy. “It was amazing to see the talent we have within our community and how everyone embraced the spirit of Diwali. I also enjoyed MCing for the event as it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new at work!” For Gracy, Diwali means “family, sweets, and good energy. She’s all about the classic jalebi. “There is just something so comforting in its orange crispy sweetness.” And when it comes to style, Gracy was inspired by her mom and chose “a classic Indian outfit with traditional jhumkas (earrings) that felt festive yet timeless.” Gracy believes celebrating Diwali at work helps everyone “appreciate the diversity within the team” and brings everyone closer together. Here’s to more celebrations and connections in the future! Thanks Gracy for sharing your Diwali joy! #Diwali #Celebration #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeSpotlight #Costco #CDS

  • After our Diwali celebration on October 20th, we had the pleasure of catching up with Ramya Manjunatha, our IT Sustainability Functional Analyst, who believes Diwali at work is “like lighting a diya of connection, it brings people together beyond roles and departments.” For Ramya, these celebrations are a bridge to real empathy and community. As she puts it “a story, a culture, a heartbeat; sharing traditions, food, music, and laughter builds appreciation and turns colleagues into a community.” Ramya dreams of more celebrations at work. “Every culture brings its own stories, flavors, and traditions. Creating space for these experiences not only builds understanding, it turns our workplace into a vibrant mosaic of humanity.” Asked what Diwali means personally, Ramya shared, “At its heart, Diwali is a spiritual reminder to rekindle the light within, especially in times of darkness. It’s about radiating kindness, hope, and compassion.” Her celebrations at home are “a full-on sensory explosion-twinkling diyas, vibrant decor, endless trays of sweets, and laughter over old stories.” Ramya’s favorite part of the company event? “Participating felt like a warm embrace, a true home away from home,” and she loved seeing everyone come together, from vibrant dance performances to the mic-drop Hindi karaoke. And of course, when asked to pick a favorite Diwali treat: “That’s like asking me to pick a favorite star in a sky full of sweets and savories! Honestly, I couldn’t choose.” Thanks, Ramya, for inspiring us and reminding us how celebration can truly bring people together. #Diwali #Celebration #WorkplaceCulture #EmployeeSpotlight #Costco #CDS
