What a throwback. We’ve come a long way from fax machines, but this just shows that behind every great event, it’s always been the people and the details that keep everything moving. Loved this perspective.
Try explaining to a young planner today that we used to fly 3,500 people to a conference without checking a single government ID. ✈️ They look at you like you’re describing life on Mars. 👽 In the 90s, we didn’t have Cvent or registration software. We had a fax machine that never stopped screaming. 📠 For a 3,000-person conference, those registration forms came in on thermal paper, creating a pile on the floor that we had to process by hand. My team hand-loaded every single name into a primitive version of Excel. Then, we called the travel agents. 📞 The stakes for accuracy were incredibly high. If we made a typo, we couldn’t just click "edit." We had to pick up the phone. If an attendee changed their schedule, we waited for a new fax. But the wildest part was the leftover tickets. 🎫 If 50 people canceled last minute, we didn't lose the value. We just handed those physical tickets to 50 other people. The name on the boarding pass didn’t matter because nobody checked IDs at the gate. Back then, we didn't have automation to catch our mistakes. We only had discipline.
