At Pittsburgh Robotics and AI Discovery Day, we also ran a short student survey on how they’re using AI. Here’s what we heard: What they use AI for: Most use it primarily for research, about a quarter for coding, and the rest for a mix of homework, creative work, and other tasks. Tools: All reported using ChatGPT in the last six months, with a few also trying Gemini and Midjourney. Frequency: Everyone uses AI at least monthly—responses were split between daily, weekly, and monthly, with no one selecting “rarely” or “never.” School support: Most said AI use is mixed and depends on the instructor, with only a minority reporting clear school-wide guidelines. At Pittsburgh Robotics and AI Discovery Day, we ran a short survey on organizations’ views on different sourcing models for manufacturing and on tariffs. On sourcing, local and U.S. based manufacturing were clear favorites. Ally-shoring was evenly split across strongly avoid, neutral, and favor, suggesting teams are still weighing the trade-offs between cost, risk, and alignment with their business norms. Off-shoring to lowest-cost regions was unanimously negative. On tariffs, responses ranged from very negative to neutral for both overall sentiment and business impact. No one viewed current tariffs as a positive force. Sharing the two charts from the survey here. MSA - The Safety Company collaborated with Daedalus to design the interface for LUNAR, a handheld search and rescue device that helps firefighters locate team members through real-time tracking displayed on a thermal imaging screen. Our work focused on integrating direction and distance tracking into the thermal imaging display and developing an intuitive UI for critical conditions.
