About us
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) is an award-winning district, known for its commitment to academic excellence and learning for all students. The district is the fifth largest school district in California and the largest in Northern California, serving more than 62,000 students representing 88 different languages spoken. The district has 67 schools (42 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, 7 alternative schools including an adult education school) covering 320 square miles within the City of Elk Grove, the City of Sacramento, the City of Rancho Cordova and the unincorporated area of Sacramento County. The district’s rich history reaches beyond unification and into the 19th century. The elementary school district known as “Elk Grove” was formed in 1866 and is one of the oldest in the state of California. The Elk Grove Union High School District followed almost 30 years later, opening in 1893. The unification of the Elk Grove district took place in 1959. Why Do We Do What We Do? We strive to prepare our students to be college and career ready upon graduation by ensuring that every student is learning in every classroom in every subject every day.

This spring, we were excited to welcome Neal Colwell, Principal Engineer at KSN Civil Engineering, as a new industry partner at EGUSD’s CTE Advisory. Neal immediately jumped into action, partnering with CTE teacher Claire Burkhart and Mr. David Segal at Pleasant Grove High School on a powerful interdisciplinary project with IDEA Academy students. Inspired by the historic 1928 Lake Okeechobee hurricane, students were challenged to act as civil engineers for a hurricane-prone municipality—designing levees and dams, writing formal engineering reports, developing public outreach campaigns, and presenting to a mock city council that included Neal and EGUSD educators. Neal's mentorship brought real-world relevance and engineering expertise to the classroom, helping students elevate their projects with authentic professional feedback. We’re incredibly grateful for his support and look forward to growing this partnership in the coming year!
