For one longtime Detroiter, a leaking roof and dangerous mold threatened the home she had cherished for more than five decades. With support from the Detroit Home Repair Fund, her house was not only repaired—it was restored with dignity and care. Hear from her and the partners who make DHRF possible about how this work is transforming homes—and lives—for generations to come. This week I joined Bloomberg News’ The Close to discuss a challenge impacting communities nationwide: one of the most acute housing affordability crises we have seen as a nation. Families are being priced out of good homes in strong neighborhoods. Rents continue rising faster than incomes. Housing providers are struggling to keep properties afloat amid skyrocketing insurance, mounting climate impacts, and ballooning operating costs. Yet there are real reasons for optimism. Momentum is finally building to meet this crisis with the scale and urgency it demands. The bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, recently passed in the Senate, represents one of the most significant housing and community development packages in decades. It strengthens homelessness programs, modernizes rural housing, streamlines disaster recovery, boosts local capacity, and accelerates both the creation and preservation of affordable homes. Americans have been clear: housing affordability is central to their futures and to the stability of our economy. Thank you to Katie Greifeld and Romaine Bostick, CFA for having me on to share why we’re poised to tackle the crisis head-on, so everyone in this country can live in a home that is affordable, resilient, and a foundation for opportunity. Youth and young adults make up 27% of the homeless population in the U.S. That reality should stop all of us in our tracks. Young people are our future. When they experience homelessness, it disrupts everything — education, health, employment, and their sense of safety and belonging. That’s why we have a responsibility to ensure they have safe, stable housing and the support systems needed to thrive. One of the most powerful reminders of what’s possible comes from Jakiah Moore, Youth Navigator at A Place 4 Me. She shares how one person changed her trajectory during a period of housing instability.

Innovation in housing means reimagining systems that create and scale opportunity. That’s exactly what David Hardin, CEO of Build Urban Prosperity (Build UP), is doing. With support from the Enterprise-Wells Fargo led Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge, Build UP is redefining what high school can look like – combining academics with hands-on workforce training and experience and a pathway to homeownership. Connecting with fellow Breakthrough Challenge winners has been key to the growth and impact of Build UP’s innovative model, according to David. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
