The L.A. soundstage business has faced major turbulence in recent years. Pandemic disruptions, prolonged strikes and a shift in production out of California have left many soundstages underused and operators struggling to stay afloat. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Peter M., Managing Principal, Media Insurance Services at EPIC, says most soundstage operators are still “treading water.” But with California more than doubling its film and TV tax credit cap to $750M and growing calls for a federal tax credit, momentum could be shifting. As Peter notes, when state leaders and private equity firms align on revitalizing California’s production scene, the federal government may be next to act, and that could be the “game changer” the industry needs, not just in Los Angeles, but around the country.
