Just about everyone agrees the cost of a bad hire is significant, but have you ever really looked at all of the direct and indirect costs? Sure, there is the loss of recruiting investment, compensation and benefits (and even bonuses), but a bad hire costs so much more than the direct cost. Favoritism in the workplace is wrong. Managers must be careful to distribute work fairly and evenly and not “favor” any particular individual. Many reasons for this, but from a company’s perspective, favoritism lives at the corner of harassment and discrimination both of which are illegal. Without a doubt favoritism can create a hostile work environment. There is very fine line here. Sure, you are tempted to “favor” good performers, people you brought into the company, or workers you know personally, but in point of fact, this is unfair. If workers believe they are treated unfairly, they will seek work settings where they believe they will be treated fairly. More recruiting and more cost will follow. The reality is workplace favoritism kills morale and even performance and productivity.
