Understanding how lithium-ion cells respond to mechanical impacts and crash forces is critical for electric vehicle safety. At the 25th Annual Advanced Automotive Battery Conference, Exponent’s Wahid Zaman, Ph.D., will present the poster, “Evaluating Crush Resiliency by Impact Testing of Li-ion Battery Cells for Automotive Applications.” This poster evaluates cylindrical lithium-ion batteries under targeted impact at different locations using a customized test fixture and standard impact load cells to deliver and measure well-defined mechanical forces. Varying the impact location and energy over different cell locations identified weaker points in cell design that can trigger thermal runaway, offering insights to help EV manufacturers strengthen large-format battery pack design and crash safety. Explore statistical methods for sparse air quality data at the Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting, where Exponent’s Jacob Kremer, PhD, will present “Applications of Statistical Analysis Methods to Sparse Data at Low Fine Particulate Matter Concentrations,” Dec. 8, 11:30 a.m.-11:50 a.m. EST. Dr. Kremer will examine how different modeling techniques can perform when estimating health risks from low-level PM2.5 exposure — an area where data are often limited. Building on the work of Al‑Kindi et al. (2019), he will compare approaches such as Cox Proportional Hazards, Poisson GAMs, and Pohar Perme models, along with spatial interpolation techniques like Kriging and Inverse Distance Weighting. The presentation will explore how mortality risk patterns may change at lower PM2.5 concentrations and how results can depend on modeling approach and data source, highlighting the importance of thoughtful method selection and high-resolution data in environmental health analysis. Understanding how energy storage systems can fail is critical for the safety of transportation infrastructure and electric vehicles. At the 25th Annual Advanced Automotive Battery Conference, Exponent’s Keith Beers, Ph.D., P.E., CFEI, CQE, CVFI, will present “Cell Enclosure Grounding: The Most Interesting Failure Mode You Never Heard Of”, Dec. 9, 11:10 a.m. PST. His session will examine how pouch-format lithium-ion cells can be susceptible to a failure mode where the aluminum layer connects to system ground or the cell anode, its implications, and design considerations for mitigation. He will also discuss its relevance to other cell formats, including large prismatic cells used in EV and BESS applications. Please drop by booth 517 to connect with us.
