FNA to host walk to remember those lost to overdose Fairbanks, Alaska — In remembrance of those who’ve lost their lives to overdose, Fairbanks Native Association will host an International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) Walk on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025. The walk will start at Griffin Park at 12:30 p.m. and end at the Wilderness Pavilion at Pioneer Park. “We want to remember those we lost,” said Melissa Charlie, FNA Executive Director. “And we want to provide the resources people need to understand addiction, recovery and the risk of misusing prescription drugs and using street drugs.” FNA Behavioral Health Services programs are organizing the IOAD Walk to bring public awareness issues surrounding overdose. FNA also wants to let the community know what is available to combat addiction. FNA BHS has a long history of providing treatment and resources for in the community. “We’re here to help and we’re not going to judge,” said Alexis Kohrs-Jeschke, an FNA BHS New Hope Program director. “We’re here for them.” Today opioids are often laced with fentanyl, which can cause a fatality in small quanties. Methamphetamines and xylazine, a horse tranquilizer are also responsible for deaths, she said. Risks can come from prescription drugs if they aren’t used correctly, as well. FNA staff will hold a demonstration at the Wilderness Pavilion on how to use Narcon and Opvee, both used to stop an active overdose. Overdose kits will be provided, as well as fentanyl and xylazine test strips. FNA staff will have food, and entertainment. Additional resource from FNA and other organizations will be available, too. “We are ready and able to help people,” said Charlie. “The event is a way to let people know we are here to serve our community.”
