Community healing starts with trusted voices Imam Azalshoh emphasizes the importance of helping people affected by illness, aligning his teachings with the values of Islam. “I read a lot of khutbas about the importance of helping the sick,” he explains.   In Tajikistan, he combines his spiritual calling with public health action — using his own khutbas [sermons] to share lifesaving information about tuberculosis (TB). The country struggles specifically with multidrug-resistant TB, or TB that does not respond to the two most effective first-line antibiotics used to treat it. Imam Azalshoh’s mission is clear: Erase the stigma of tuberculosis (TB) with compassion, truth and trust. “For many years I had a negative attitude toward TB,” he admits. “After participating in this training, the first thing I did was get acquainted with the list of people with TB in my village. I went to each of them in their homes to find out about their living conditions. “This long journey often made me late for school, and I missed classes on multiple occasions,” said 11-year-old Eman, who used to carry 80 pounds of water for her family every morning. 💧 In Ethiopia, clean water wasn’t just about health — it’s about safety, dignity and education. Conflict had left boreholes broken, forcing families to collect unsafe water from faraway streams. Engineers working with FHI 360 restored the local water supply. Every morning, Eman walked for 90 minutes to fill two jerry cans with water — missing school and risking her safety. “I knew the water I would bring back to my family was unsafe… but we did not have any other choice,” she said. The war in Tigray cut Eman and her family off from clean water. Now, thanks to FHI 360’s partnership with the local water authority, her town’s boreholes are restored and clean water is just steps away. Eman is back in school, ready to learn and dream again. When conflict broke out in Ethiopia, engineer Tsegay saw neighbors struggling to find safe water 💧 — some walking six hours a day on foot. “I saw people living in rural areas that were searching for water, walking 6 hours on foot. I vowed that I was going to do something about this crisis...
