It might look like we are living at the peak of technology, but in many ways we are still stuck at the end of the 18th century. That was when steam engines were reduced in size and became more efficient. The first thing people did with this breakthrough was place the new engine onto a horse carriage. It took another 100 years of human imagination to invent the car. From my perspective, this is what we are seeing with AI today. We use it to speed up code writing, to optimize operations, to handle customer interactions. All of these are valuable, but they are still just new engines on old carriages. What interests me is not upgrading the carriage. I want to figure out what the next car looks like. Not more engines on the same old structure. A completely new way of thinking. I talked about this and much more with Joseph Fuller on Harvard Business School’s Managing the Future of Work podcast. Link in the comments.
