About us

Our story is one of progress and change. From our founding, and to the current day, we remain one of the most adaptive and flexible higher education institutions in the state. In 1964, following significant community conversations and legislative work, Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Technical School was launched. Over the years, we have trained thousands of students in hands-on and high-wage technical programs. In 2007, we received regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission which allowed us to offer Associate of Applied Science degrees to complement our technical certificates. In 2010, we changed our mascot from the Tornados to become the Mavericks. Our colors changed from blue and white to red and black. And most notably, we shortened our name to Northwest Tech. In 2024, following two years of significant work with employees, communities, and the Kansas legislature we completed a formal affiliation with Fort Hays State University and North Central Kansas Technical College. While we are a part of the Fort Hays State University family, we remain independently accredited with funding and finances remaining separate from the university. The future is bright! Our new colors are black and gold, our new mascot is the Tiger, and we continue to adapt and change to the needs of our business, communities, and students.
