About us

Fort Monroe is a National Historic Landmark located in Hampton, VA, that is dedicated to the preservation of the area’s historical legacies. Through a partnership between the National Park Service, Fort Monroe Authority, and the City of Hampton, Fort Monroe provides visitors with panoramic waterfront views, nature trails, historic homes and buildings, restaurants, and beaches. Have the complete event experience when you choose our historic setting for any occasion with a variety of venues — including Continental Park and The Commanding General’s Residence and Garden. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or looking for a place to celebrate life’s biggest moments, our family-friendly atmosphere invites you to learn about our roots and explore the lay of the land. Also known as Freedom’s Fortress, Fort Monroe has witnessed some of our nation’s most significant events. Home to the landing site of the first Africans in this country and many military operations, our best efforts have been put forth to preserve the historical nature of Fort Monroe. Experience historic sites like our Casemate Museum by scheduling a tour through our Visitor & Education Center and learn about the legacies established here in Hampton. Historical and Cultural Significance For at least 400 years, the point of land known as Old Point Comfort that now includes Fort Monroe has served as the key defensive site at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Fort Monroe was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and recognized as the Fort Monroe National Monument through an executive order signed by President Barack Obama in 2011. Many moments in history have happened at Fort Monroe including ones pertaining to both Indigenous and African cultures.
