  • 52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 48: Meet Nannie! Joining Goodwill's EARN program last May, Nannie was committed to personal and professional growth to open up more employment opportunities. Within a few short weeks at Goodwill, she already completed the NRFF Customer Services and Sales training, learning valuable skills she can carry into any workplace. This June, Nannie began a Subsidized Work Experience in Goodwill's E-commerce team. She quickly learned new skills and thrived. In fact, Goodwill hired her as a team member after she completed her work experience! Now, Nannie is in her third month at E-Commerce. Goodwill's EARN team continues to check in on Nannie to stay updated on her progress and address any needs that come up. Congratulations and best of luck going forward, Nannie! • 52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 47: We hosted our annual GED graduation! This year, we were thrilled to celebrate our largest graduating class in six years, comprising 48 graduates. Each GED student comes to Goodwill with a story, determined to earn their high school credential to open more opportunities to fulfilling employment. Our students consistently go above and beyond in their studies, often finding time to study between working full-time, parenting, and managing their daily lives. Cyndy, our class speaker, first came to Goodwill in 2021 as a student in our English as a Second Language program. After improving her English, she enrolled in the GED program and was committed to completing her high school education. Now that she has her GED, Cyndy is continuing her education at the Community College of Allegheny County. Goodwill is proud of our graduates and their devotion to their education. Many of our graduates plan to use their diplomas to secure better jobs or continue their education, such as Cyndy. Congratulations to this year's graduates! • Happy National Philanthropy Day! Goodwill is proud to celebrate the charitable work that all our team members do to make a positive impact on the individuals in our local community. As a nonprofit organization, Goodwill heavily relies on fundraising, the generosity of other organizations, grants, and individual donors to support our 50+ programs and services. Meet Laura, board member at Goodwill! Laura is an avid thrifter and enjoys finding opportunities to give back to her community. Having a career in development herself, she understands the importance of building connections and leaning on the generosity of others. Growing up, Laura's family prioritized volunteering and giving back to the community. Now, she carries that mindset into her work on Goodwill's board. She identifies with our value RESPECT, noting, "Having meaningful employment means a lot to many people, and Goodwill respects everyone trying to find a job and a meaningful career by supporting them in all areas of their journey." Laura is proud to support Goodwill's mission and new opportunities to engage our community. In addition to her work at Goodwill, Laura serves on several boards, including Phi Beta Kappa’s Pittsburgh Association, Meta Mesh Wireless Communities, and The Democratic Committee’s Ninth Ward. She is also the Endowment Chair for the Endowment Committee at her church. Goodwill is honored to have a board member like Laura, who is caring, attentive, and mission-minded. Thank you for all the work you do in our community, Laura! #GoodwillSWPA #philanthropy #nationalphilanthropyday #giveback #communityimpact

  • 52 Weeks of Goodwill, Week 46: The Goodwill Tech Academy is excited to begin its third year of partnering with United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania as a member of the Digital Navigator Network! Jane contacted the Digital Navigator Network after receiving utility bills that were too high to afford. We helped Jane identify that her Internet bill was too high and provided resources to access low-cost internet that she qualified for due to receiving public benefits. Additionally, Jane needed a computer and was interested in digital skills classes. She was connected with Computer Reach and received information on Goodwill's digital skills classes. Soon, Jane shared that she had signed up for low-cost internet, received her computer, and was about to start digital skills classes! Goodwill is so excited to see Jane thrive with the right tools, resources, and community support. By leveraging the PA 211 helpline, individuals are connected with digital navigators hosted at organizations in the region who are trained to assist them in accessing affordable internet, obtaining devices, and learning about digital skills training in the area. If you are looking for ways in which to learn more about obtaining a digital device, acquiring affordable internet, or improving your computer skills, call 211 and ask to be referred to a digital navigator.
