Empowering Adults with IDD through Lifelong Learning, Community Engagement, and Vocational Opportunities | Education Program Manager of Empowerment Works at Goodwill Dallas
A few months ago I was invited to join our very first Emerging Leaders cohort at Goodwill Industries of Dallas, Inc. This program has meant so much to me, not just because of the project itself but because of what I’ve learned along the way. We studied the book Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change, and it really opened my eyes. It is not just about coming up with a good idea. It is about how you motivate people, give them the tools they need, build support around them, and make sure the structures are there to keep the change going. As part of this cohort, we were tasked to research and identify a need within our Goodwill Dallas community. That could mean something at HQ, across our 20+ stores, or in programs like mine, Empowerment Works that serve adults with IDD. Through that process, our group chose to focus on something that kept rising to the surface: food insecurity. Food insecurity is not just the lack of food. It is also the lack of access to nutrient-dense, whole foods that are not filled with additives, dyes, fillers, and loads of sugar. It is an issue that touches so many lives in our community. A survey we created and sent out to over 200 of our frontline workers showed that even if they wanted to eat healthier, they didn't know where to begin or what that looked like. It also showed that a large percentage of our staff often choose between paying for electricity instead of food, including needed staples. Together, we created a plan with five parts (including a community garden) and even used AI to help us imagine what it could look like one day. This cohort has been one of the most important experiences I have had at Goodwill. It has pushed me, connected me with some amazing peers across our organization, and reminded me why I love the work I do. Today my group had the privilege of sharing our vision with our exec team with the hopes of bringing this to life someday. Regardless of the outcome, I'm just super grateful to have been a part of this, and I'm super proud of us! #influencer #changemaker #leadingchange #leadership #capstone #goodwilldallas
