  • 📣 Opening today! 📣 Explore the Hammer's latest exhibition featuring Japanese woodblock prints from the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts' rich collection. Ukiyo-e, or ‘pictures of the floating world,’ emerged during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868), first depicting the vibrant life of kabuki theaters, teahouses, and pleasure quarters before expanding to landscapes, literature, and folklore. "Rising Sun, Falling Rain" presents more than 80 prints, including works by Hokusai, Hiroshige, Yoshitoshi, and Hasui, tracing the evolution of ukiyo-e and the later shin-hanga movement that shaped global perceptions of Japanese art. Color woodblock print (nishiki-e). Sheet: 9 15/16 x 14 7/8 in. Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, Hammer Museum. • ✨See where movement meets paper, where dance tells the truth, and the stage is reclaimed.✊🏾💃🏽 In the "Black Box" series, Kandis Williams' powerful, layered collages feature dancers in motion and fragmented limbs. She explores how Black bodies have shaped, inspired, and been exploited within European dance cultures. 🩰✨ Pulling from the legacy of iconic Black choreographers like Alvin Ailey and Donald McKayle, each cut-out confronts how Black movement is perceived, appropriated, and often stripped of its roots. Williams positions the body as more than just a form—it's a site of memory, trauma, innovation, and radical beauty. This artwork is a part of the Mohn Art Collective (or MAC3), a jointly managed collection by the Hammer Museum, LACMA, MOCA and a gift from L.A. collectors Jarl and Pamela Mohn. View it now in "Performance on Paper" at the Hammer now through August 10.

  • As the U.S. Supreme Court made historic rulings challenging and reshaping the legal foundations of American life, we invite citizens, legal professionals and professionals to join a timely discussion. In partnership with the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law, a distinguished panel of expert scholars will examine recent Supreme Court decisions on presidential power, voting rights, gender-affirming care, and the First Amendment. This is not just a legal moment—it’s a constitutional one. We invite your attention.
