We're leading the design of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) E25 Biolink redevelopment — a transformative upgrade that reimagines an underutilized 1970s building into a vibrant hub for biomedical research, teaching and collaboration. Conceived as a dual-purpose environment, the project integrates advanced scientific infrastructure with spaces that foster connection, well-being and community. The design combines complex high-performance laboratories and teaching areas with architectural strategies that maximize natural light, transparency and visual connectivity across the campus. In Hennepin County, Minnesota's most populous county, our team surveyed residents about recycling, composting and waste reduction to lay the groundwork for a Solid Waste Management Plan that helps advance a zero-waste future. The county's goal is to divert 90% or more of waste from landfills or incinerators. Results of our survey informed strategies that include expanding access to organics recycling, reducing single-use plastics and improving drop-off options for hard-to-recycle items. Within a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, a transformative shift is reshaping how we design large-scale hospitals for major medical institutions. In dense urban environments — home to many academic health centers — high-rise healthcare facilities are emerging as a response to spatial constraints and mark a progressive move toward vertical integration and a reimagined patient experience from the ground up. In this Hospital + Healthcare article, our Global Design Director, Brian Kowalchuk, and Australian Health Principal, Conor Larkins, share their perspectives on how vertical hospitals are redefining the future of care. They explore how these facilities are not only optimizing clinical performance and operational efficiency but also enhancing human experience and strengthening connections to the communities they serve.
