At High Peak Software, we have implemented the mandatory Menstrual Leave Policy, set by the government of Karnataka. What was so far unofficial for us has been made official. We understand the necessity behind this and applaud this decision.
It was that time of the month. It was a dull Friday, and I had a very important meeting with the High Peak Software leadership. And I couldn’t get up in the morning. I doubled up in pain, nature just taking her merciless course. After debating with myself for about an hour, I wrote a private message to my CEO, Vinay Chandra. “Sorry, Vinay. Can’t make it. I am on my period and I’m feeling unusually lightheaded. I’m in pain. Think I need to rest it out. Really sorry about the last-minute. It’s usually not this bad.” I felt queasy writing that message because we have been socially conditioned to view menstruating as a dirty secret. Shhhh! While half the population bleeds a week for every month, the other half is not meant to know about it. So, bloody shhh! But, I thought honesty is warranted as I was cancelling last minute, which I have never done before, at least not due to periods. I immediately received a warm message: “Thanks for trusting me with this information, Radhika. I understand. Please rest. We can do this meeting when you are better.” I wrote back, “Sorry about the TMI. Thanks for understanding.” Social conditioning rearing its head again. He simply replied: “It’s not TMI at all. I have a wife and we have brought up two lovely daughters. I’m well aware of what this entails. No problem.” And with that, I closed my Slack and went to rest without guilt. And today, we have implemented the mandatory menstrual leave policy for the women at High Peak, which has been unofficially followed so far here. We have just named the policy according to the state law. It’s quite heartening to see this change with such tangible actions. We talk about AI furthering humanity’s growth. And yet, we grow increasingly disconnected day by day. It’s hard to raise families with kids in this current inflation rate and economic conditions. Why? Because we fail to put people first. We fail to take care of ourselves. We forget that life isn’t a box within which you can run by specific rules. There are different genders. There are different challenges. And we hold space for us all. Slowly. But surely. Take care of yourself. Take care of your people: men, women and the genders in between. Business takes care of itself when your people well-fed, well-rested, raring to rise again the next day with renewed energy to perform up to their highest potential.
