Chewy Health President Mita Malhotra and Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) president Steven Feldman highlight an important truth: veterinary care plays a vital role in supporting and strengthening the human–animal bond. Today, that bond is deeper than ever, yet increasingly complex as pet owners navigate the pressures of modern life and the rise of new technological tools. Their perspective emphasizes how veterinary professionals can meet this moment by embracing innovation and using technology to make care more accessible, personalized, and responsive to the needs of pets and the people who love them. New Study Highlights How Different Pets Relate to Owner Well-Being This research examined owners of 16 different pet types and found that the relationship between pet ownership and well-being varies widely. Most pets showed no clear association with happiness or health. Birds and reptiles (other than turtles) were linked with lower mental health, while dog ownership—especially small dogs—was associated with higher well-being. Notably, the benefits of having a dog depended heavily on regular dog-walking. The study also emphasized the importance of accounting for demographics, personality, and environmental factors when studying pet-related well-being. New Research on Measuring Human–Horse Attachment! This study introduces the Human-Equine Attachment Questionnaire (HEAQ), a new tool designed to measure secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment in human–horse relationships. Across two large studies, the research team refined the scale from an initial item pool to a final 19-item measure with strong validity and reliability. While avoidant attachment remains more complex to assess, the HEAQ offers a promising way to better understand how interactions with horses support well-being, inform equine-assisted services, and shape experiences within the equine industry. 🐾 “I Just Don’t Know if I Can Do It” — Understanding Dog Relinquishment 🐾 A new study in Human-Animal Interactions by Holland et al. explores how dog owners contemplate whether to relinquish their companion dogs, particularly when facing behavioural challenges. Key insights include: Owners often see relinquishment as a “last resort when hope is gone.” Many navigate conflicting emotions, balancing attachment, guilt, and the dog’s welfare. Owners go to great lengths to avoid giving up their dogs, highlighting the emotional toll of this decision. Findings point to the importance of support services to help owners manage behavior challenges and make informed decisions. Understanding these experiences can help reduce dog relinquishment and promote both animal welfare and owner well-being.
