Five years after the George to the Rescue team first transformed the Marquino family’s home for their son Danny, the crew returned once more — this time to help the family’s devoted husband and father, Larry, rebuild after a life-changing injury. This remarkable renovation brought together designers, builders, and local partners to create an accessible, welcoming space where Larry can regain independence and continue making memories with his family. We’re so moved by the Marquino family’s story and the incredible community that came together to make this possible. The design for the first honeycomb shade began in an unlikely place: an attic. In 1977, Wendell Colson built his first prototype from Mylar and cardboard, creating a shade that combined form and function—trapping air for insulation while offering a clean, modern look. Hunter Douglas brought his invention to life in 1985 as the Duette® Honeycomb Shade, quickly recognized for its energy efficiency and elegant design. Colson joined Hunter Douglas to lead research and development— and decades later, he still pushes boundaries in design and technology. We recently visited Colson in his workspace to talk about innovation, inspiration, and the story behind an invention that changed the way people live with light.
