About us
The International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) is the largest network of maritime colleges and universities globally, with a rich history of collaboration dating back over a century. Originally rooted in the UK, IAMI has expanded its reach internationally in the past decade, welcoming diverse members from around the world. Membership in IAMI is open to maritime education and training providers globally. The primary objectives of IAMI revolve around facilitating communication and exchange of perspectives among regulators, employers, educational bodies, and national entities involved in maritime training. Through its collaborative efforts, IAMI influences both current practices and future developments in maritime education. IAMI collaborates with key stakeholders such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Chamber of Shipping, the Maritime Skills Alliance, and the Superyacht Alliance for Professional Standards, to stay abreast of industry needs and standards, guiding its initiatives effectively. IAMI operates four sub-groups which actively address training issues and qualifications, focusing on various aspects of mandatory Deck/Navigational Training, Engineering Training, Small Craft Training, as well as industry-led Superyacht training, under the IAMI governed GUEST Program. The GUEST Program provides industry-led course development and Training Provider Accreditations, ensuring adherence to rigorous standards within Superyacht education. Additionally, IAMI conducts exams, assessments, and certification issuance for MCA and GUEST courses, ensuring learners meet required standards. Its Annual General Meeting and Conference provide platforms for networking and strategic discussions on marine education and training, highlighting its pivotal role in shaping global maritime education standards.

Strengthening IAMI for the future - Gillian Ferguson named Interim Chief Executive Officer of IAMI We are delighted to share that Gillian Ferguson FCIPD has been appointed by IAMI as Interim CEO. The shipping industry is evolving rapidly, with decarbonisation, automation and security amongst key influences that are significantly changing shipping operations. As a result the knowledge and skills of seafarers and the roles they have to fulfil in the future are similarly having to keep pace including a fundamental revision of the curriculum leading to professional qualifications. At IAMI, we’re focused on supporting this shift by working with our international membership and industry bodies, to be positioned to meet these challenges and opportunities. As part of this process we are adapting our core structure to ensure we are positioned to play the key change leadership role our members and partners expect of us. Gillian brings valuable experience in leading organisations through periods of change and will help us build strong foundations for the next stage of our journey. As this is an interim appointment, a permanent CEO role will be advertised in the near future.
