Downtown Indy's hospitality stock continues to veer upscale. A company led by Herb Simon and his family is working to bring a Ritz-Carlton hotel to Indianapolis, with plans to incorporate the luxury brand into its mixed-use project on the former CSX site across Pennsylvania Street from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Three sources familiar with the deal told IBJ that a partnership agreement hasn’t been finalized between holding company Boxcar Development LLC and the Marriott-owned hotel brand. But renderings shared with a city commission this week included versions of the Ritz-Carlton’s lion head logo and brand name, with some of the images blurred. The three sources spoke to IBJ on the condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been executed and they weren’t authorized to discuss it publicly. Mickey Shuey has the story. After placing in the Top 10 at four previous editions of the World Food Championships competition for chefs, Cindy Hawkins didn’t have to settle for “nearly victorious” status in 2025. The owner of Circle City Sweets won the dessert category last month. It’s a major milestone for a career changer who graduated from Chicago’s French Pastry School and taught at Ivy Tech from 2012 to 2020. Hawkins and another Hoosier food luminary plan to make the most of Indiana’s competitive momentum by establishing a brick-and-mortar headquarters known as Hoosier Hospitality House. IBJ’s David Lindquist explains how Hawkins’ victory is much more than just icing on the cake. (See link in comments.)

For many decades—and probably since the Industrial Revolution—the cog has had a bad rap. Being considered a cog in the machine is hardly a compliment. Indeed, cogs are known to be mechanical, interchangeable and utterly pedestrian. But that’s not how Cory Lewis sees it. He was part of the Phi Gamma Delta team that won Indiana University’s Little 500 bicycle race in 1995. He sees the cog as an indispensable instrument of forward progress and a symbol of collaboration. In 2020, he created a pharmaceutical firm that he decided to name INCOG BioPharma Services, based on a brainstorm he had while riding his bike. INCOG has experienced rapid growth as a contract development and manufacturing organization producing sterile injectables for the global biopharmaceutical market. In the latest edition of IBJ’s Q&A feature, Lewis took a break from pedaling to sit down and discuss his leadership style, the role of cycling in his life and his fondness for operating at the highest gear.
