The holiday season is here, and so is an uptick in travel. That means you might have to choose between using the bathroom now or holding your pee for another hour. But is holding it good for you? How long should you hold your pee? Dr. Jorge Arzola, MD, a urologist, has the answers.

About five million Americans have Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a condition that causes irregular heartbeat. To help meet the growing need for treatment of this condition, Kettering Health is now offering Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA), a minimally invasive procedure that uses electrical pulses to treat the abnormal and unhealthy cells in the heart responsible for AFib. By inserting a catheter through the leg to reach the veins that lead to the heart, specialists send short burst of electrical energy to the unwanted tissue causing the irregularity, helping the heart regain its proper rhythm. Traditional ablation methods for treating AFib include heating or freezing the damaged tissue. However, these techniques aren’t as precise as PFA. “It’s one of the safest techniques that’s ever been developed for treatment of atrial fibrillation,” says Dr. Zubin Agarwal, cardiac electrophysiologist, “It’s also faster than any of the other techniques that are currently available.” Dr. Agarwal and our electrophysiologist team (pictured below!) have already completed the system’s first procedures, and they’re looking forward to helping more patients get back to feeling their best!

What happens when residents meet a world-class para athlete? A learning opportunity they wouldn’t get in clinic or the operating room. Last week, we hosted the Kettering Health Grandview Orthopedic Residency for a night of pickleball with Kendra Herber, our patient and the current #1 Women’s Para Standing Tennis player. After discussing how surgical and prosthetic considerations for elite adaptive athletes can influence long-term success and hearing directly from Kendra, residents were able to see those principles in action. Instead of just watching, residents jumped into doubles matches with Kendra. Seeing her speed and stability up close made it clear how dialed-in socket design and alignment can support mobility at every level whether it's a dysvascular amputee learning to walk or an athlete competing for a world title. A great reminder that the foundations of prosthetic care stay the same even when the goals look a little different. . . . Pickleball Kingdom / Centerville Kettering Health

Our Heart and Vascular team recently performed the system’s first Medtronic Symplicity renal denervation procedure, making Kettering Health the first in the Dayton region to offer it!🎉 The minimally invasive procedure brings a new treatment option to certain patients who haven’t been able to manage their high blood pressure with lifestyle changes and medication alone. Prior to the FDA’s approval of renal denervation, lifestyle changes and medication were the only treatment options for high blood pressure. By disrupting overactive nerves near the kidneys that contribute to high blood pressure, renal denervation helps reduce blood pressure. Congratulations to Dr. Niranjan Reddy, Dr. Ammar Safar, MD, FSCAI, FACC, FACP, FSVM, RPVI, and their teams! We are so grateful for their clinical expertise that is driving new treatment options and better outcomes for our patients!

Kettering Health is now using Abridge, an AI-powered platform that captures doctor-patient conversations and helps with documentation in inpatient and outpatient settings. The technology eases the administrative burden of notetaking for clinicians. This enables them to focus more fully on patient care and interaction. Abridge functions like secure, virtual administrative support. With patient consent, the audio from patient visits is captured and uploaded to the secure app, where the technology then generates an organized summary that integrates directly into the patient’s chart in Epic. The technology documents only medically relevant details, then prepares a structured note within minutes. Our clinicians are already experiencing the benefits of using Abridge. Swipe to read their thoughts on how the technology is enhancing their wellbeing, increasing efficiency, and improving care—all while maintaining patient privacy and safety.
