A fireside chat, hosted by Kroll Managing Director David Larsen and StepStone Group Private Wealth CEO Bob Long, kicked off Kroll’s re-launch of its Private Investment Valuation and Compliance Conference in November. The discussion provided a window into the evolution of private markets and regulatory environment that has enabled the democratization of private investments for retail investors. Two immensely experienced private markets professionals, Larsen and Long summarized changes in accounting standards that supported the growth of evergreen funds, evolving private market dynamics and the opportunity for investment returns within the asset class. The two articulated that the FAS 157 fair value accounting standard, introduced in late 2007, paved the way for the secondary market by introducing an accounting standard that was based on fluid mark to market estimates rather than historical cost estimates. The standard—which buckets assets into three levels based on how easily they can be accurately valued—was essential for the creation of evergreen funds that retail investors can invest in today. The democratization of private assets has already arrived, but the next frontier will involve further expanding access, such as through defined contribution plans. Education around private investments is lacking as negative sentiment—even vilification—around private investments in defined contribution plans obscures the potential return benefits of incorporating a small percentage of the asset class within a diversified portfolio.
