Resilience is more than preservation. It calls for designing places that realign development with the natural systems that support it. From the landscapes we see to the systems working quietly behind the scenes, restoration builds environmental performance into the design from the start. The final post in our Rethinking Resilience series reflects on how renewal, repair, and forward-looking design help ensure places remain resilient for both people and nature for generations to come. Environmental stewardship is at the heart of The River District. Within the site boundary, we designed thoughtfully around jurisdictional streams and wetlands, leveraging our knowledge of the regulatory process to avoid the need for individual permits while meeting nationwide wetland and stream permitting limits. By expanding stream buffers and reducing roadway crossings over sensitive valleys and waterway, we helped balance community growth with the preservation of natural ecosystems.
