President & Chief Executive Officer at Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York

Thank you all for your warm wishes on the occasion of my 10th anniversary at Little Flower earlier this week. I'm proud of and sentimental about this milestone - it is a privilege to lead Little Flower and do this work. Here are my reflections on 10 things I've learned in the past ten years, which I shared at our recent annual reception. Typical GenX, they are David Letterman style! NUMBER 10. Ten years isn’t really a long time. I’ve been CEO for a little over 10% of the organization's history. Just a little blip! NUMBER 9. Work for the right board.  The Little Flower board is unique in that it puts mission first, always.  We have many long-time and multi-generational members – with this organizational commitment spanning decades, our board takes a long view in its stewardship of the organization. NUMBER 8. Change is a good thing. In the past ten years, we have been Sanctuary certified and nationally accredited. We have consolidated all our NYC offices into our Brooklyn Flagship. And best of all, we legally affiliated with the amazing St. John’s Residence for Boys as our subsidiary. All of these changes charted an innovative future while honoring our history. NUMBER 7. Sisters are people too. I’ve often told the Sisters who live in the convent on our campus how nuns used to scare me when I was a kid. I didn’t even know they were real humans! It has been an honor to get to know the very real, very devoted Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth over the last ten years. NUMBER 6. Our roots are deep in both NYC and Long Island, which makes us really unique as a downstate organization. In 1929, Fr. Quinn, the pastor of St. Peter Claver church in Brooklyn acquired the Wading River campus to help children in need. NUMBER 5. When we think of Little Flower, we think of Wading River and Brooklyn, but don’t forget Garden City!  Many of our founding families live within a few miles of this very hotel, including our honorees tonight. NUMBER 4. Talented leadership matters. I have been lucky to report to four different board chairs – Keith Fell, Len Scosica, Howard Nolan, and now David Gilmartin, each of whom has been an extraordinary leader and mentor. I have also been privileged to hire and support an amazing Senior Executive Council. I want to particularly thank our COO Kerri Smith and CFO Matt Bredes. NUMBER 3. We couldn’t do our work without our direct care staff. At Little Flower and St. John’s combined, we have hundreds of full and part time direct care employees. Despite the high stress and high turnover in these positions, some of these employees have worked for us for decades. NUMBER 2. When in doubt, consult the wisdom of St. Therese, the Little Flower. I often read her writings and find a quotation for every occasion. One of my favorites is very fitting for this milestone: “I have at last found my vocation; it is love!” And the Number 1 lesson I've learned leading Little Flower: Mission first, always.
