Leading the Way Since 1864!
About us
Unsurpassed for 160 Years We operate a fleet of more than 60 tugboats, crew boats, and barges in 13 locations along the U.S. East Coast from Eastport, ME to San Juan, PR. The fleet includes 38 Z-Drive/tractor tugs and 20-plus vessels involved in coastal towing with more than a combined 270,000 H.P. In each port, McAllister is engaged in ship docking (servicing more than 1,000 steamship companies), general harbor towing, coastal towing, windfarm support, and bulk transportation. We are currently building two new tractor tugs at Washburn & Doughty, which will add more than 13,000 hp to our fleet. These assets and our talented teams will ensure that we continue the McAllister family tradition of being an innovative force in marine transportation.

Big news on the water: the GERARD McALLISTER has joined our flagship New York fleet. American-built at Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. in Maine, GERARD is the fifth in a six-tug series of 84-metric-ton bollard pull, low-emission tractor tugs. She is our 42nd tractor tug and our 13th with more than 80 metric tons of bollard pull. Power, ingenuity, maneuverability all in one package to assist the largest ships arriving on the U.S. East Coast. On her way to her homeport, the GERARD stopped at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, giving cadets the chance to step aboard, tour the new tug, meet her crew, and ask real-world questions about working in the tugboat industry. For the next generation of mariners, the GERARD McALLISTER is a commanding example of where the industry is headed: high-tech, low-emission, and mission-critical to global trade. From 1864 to today, we’ve stayed family-owned for five generations and are still investing in new, American-built, state-of-the-art tugs — four delivered in the last two years and another coming in 2026. Welcome GERARD! #McAllisterTowing #JoinTheFamily #OnwardAndUpward #LeadingTheWay #NewYorkHarbor #PortOfNewYork #NextGenTugs #MaritimeInnovation #SustainabilityAtSea

McAllister Towing just completed another successful round of advanced simulator training at The Seamen's Church Institute ’s Church Institute in Paducah KY. This session continued to build the skill and confidence of our mariners through hands-on training in real-world towing and advanced ship assist scenarios. Exercises focused on tethered escort, transverse arrest, indirect mode handling, deck edge immersion, bow to bow maneuvers, and response to ship assist line breaks. Each evolution helped sharpen decision making, coordination, and situational awareness. Thank you to our mariners for their hard work and commitment throughout the week. Our General Managers and leadership team are proud of their efforts. As we continue to invest in our people, we are forging the future of McAllister. We also thank the SCI staff for their continued excellence and partnership in delivering top-tier maritime training. #McAllisterTowing #SCI #TugTraining #MarineSafety #ShipAssist #Paducah #MaritimeExcellence #OnwardAndUpward #KeepTheFlagFlying

Teamwork and precision from Philadelphia to Norfolk ⚓️ On October 16, 2025, McAllister Towing’s tugs Patrice McAllister and Reid McAllister successfully towed the USNS Burlington (T-EPF-10) from Philadelphia, PA to Norfolk, VA, transiting safely through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Under the command of Tow Master Captain Michael Williams aboard the Patrice McAllister, the operation required expert handling through narrow waterways and shifting currents — a task our crews executed with trademark precision and seamanship. This mission highlights McAllister’s enduring tradition of unsurpassed service and dedication to the U.S. fleet, continuing more than 160 years of leading the way in American maritime operations. #McAllisterTowing #TeamMcAllister #TugLife #USNavy #USNSBurlington #MaritimeExcellence #Philadelphia #Norfolk #CDCanal #PatriceMcAllister #ReidMcAllister #UnsurpassedService #OnwardAndUpward #LeadingTheWay #JoinTheFamily
