Congratulations to Maia Steward Ed.D., MCOE Continuous Improvement Specialist, who was recently honored by the CISC Science Subcommittee for her leadership in environmental and science education. While you may recognize her from the Science and Engineering Fair, Dr. Steward helped develop the statewide Climate Literacy Toolkit and authored its resource page featuring free, high-quality climate curriculum. She also serves as a regional CREEC leader and designs culturally responsive learning experiences, including a recent Environmental Literacy Summer Institute for educators in our northern region. Foster and homeless youth across Mendocino County will receive 280 jackets this winter thanks to a generous grant from The Community Foundation of Mendocino County. This funding was made possible through the 2025 Fund for Healthy & Inclusive Communities, and we are grateful for the support it provides to students' well-being and comfort. School liaisons regularly share how much these jackets mean to students, from those receiving their first new piece of clothing to youth who rely on them for warmth while biking to school, to healthcare appointments, and to food distribution sites.

Mendocino County was well represented at the Bridge to the Future VI Secondary Transition Institute, where 13 SELPA WorkAbility I and TPP educators spent two days learning how to strengthen transition planning for students with disabilities. They help students across the county successfully transition into life after high school, and we appreciate the expertise and care they bring to their work every day!

MCOE extends heartfelt thanks to Redwood Credit Union (RCU) and Foster Love for their generous donation of Birthday Boxes and Sweet Case care duffle bags to support youth served through MCOE’s Foster and Homeless Youth Services program. These gifts, assembled by nearly 1,000 RCU team members during the credit union’s Day of Impact in partnership with Foster Love, will bring comfort and joy to Mendocino County children in foster care. Each Birthday Box includes party supplies, a gift card, and a personalized birthday card to help ensure every foster child feels seen and celebrated on their special day. Each Sweet Case provides a new duffel bag filled with comfort items like a blanket, a teddy bear, and a hygiene kit—offering comfort and care during a child’s transition into a new home. We are deeply grateful for RCU’s commitment to youth in our community.
