BE HEARD. BE HELPED.
About us
Mental Health Advocates of WNY (MHAWNY) promotes mental health and wellness and supports individuals and families challenged by mental illness. When you or a family member is struggling with mental illness it can be hard to know where to turn. If you are looking for answers, we can help navigate the mental health care system and offer linkage to treatment and other support services. Since 1962, advocacy is at the core of what we do. Through awareness, education, prevention and early intervention programs, peer support, pro bono civil legal counsel, and other support services, MHAWNY actively promotes mental health and wellness for adults, children and families in homes, schools and workplaces across Western New York. Formerly Mental Health Association of Erie County, MHAWNY changed its name in 2018 to reflect the current programs, mission and geographic areas served by the non-profit agency. Advocacy. Guidance. Education. Answers. We are hear to listen. We are here to help. There is always hope.

As we head into Giving Tuesday tomorrow, we are proud to shine a light on a partner who helps make our work possible. This December, we are celebrating National Fuel as our Donor Spotlight for their incredible support of our OPCOM program — a lifeline for veteran families in WNY. We are so grateful for National Fuel’s commitment to strengthening our services to this very important cause. Their generosity helps ensure that OPCOM continues to empower and uplift those who need it most. Tomorrow’s Giving Tuesday will be extra special thanks to supporters, like National Fuel Gas Company! #donorspotlight #GivingTuesday

We’re excited to welcome Nick and Stan to our Peer team, working alongside Crisis Services, and guided by Charles -- our Peer Bridger Program Director. Our Mobile Transitional Peer program provides person-centered, mobile support to individuals transitioning out of an inpatient psychiatric stay. Peers connect with individuals before discharge, follow up within 48 hours and offer ongoing emotional support, advocacy, and skill-building rooted in lived experience. Available during non-traditional hours and part of our 24/7 on-call coverage, our Peers help ensure continuity of care, support linkage to services and offer tools that strengthen wellness and recovery. Together with Crisis Services, we’re promoting empowerment, stability and informed decision-making for every individual we serve. Seasonal depression is real and it affects so many of us as the days get shorter and colder. If you’re feeling low, tired, or unmotivated lately, you’re not alone. 🌧️ Here are a few ways to take care of yourself: ☀️ Get outside when you can! Even a short walk helps. 💬 Talk to someone - a friend, counselor, or peer advocate. 💡 Keep a consistent routine and get enough sleep. 🤍 Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your feelings are valid. Let’s remind each other: It’s okay to not be okay, and brighter days will come again ✨ #SeasonalDepressionAwareness #MentalHealthAdvocates #YouAreNotAlone
