One dashboard for all: Row-Level Security (RLS) visualized. Imagine Customer A seeing only their "Gizmo" order, while Customer B never glimpses it. RLS is the industry standard for row-level data access control and makes this possible without separate databases or dashboards. In Metabase, one approach is the Row and Column Security feature. It acts like an invisible bouncer: • Assign Customer A a user_id attribute. • Map it to your central table's columns. • Metabase filters rows automatically on login. Customer A sees only their data. Customer B sees theirs. One dashboard serves everyone, securely and scalable, whether you have 5 or 500 users.

Gracias a Nicolas Gonzalez y Álvaro Fragoso.

A key difference in database workloads? How data is stored. Some systems store data in rows and others in columns... and that changes everything Transactional databases typically store data in rows, so your app can grab everything about one user in a single, fast hit, perfect for logins, checkouts, and profile edits on heavy-traffic days. Analytical databases flip it and store data in columns, so they can blitz through billions of values to answer questions like ‘average order value by country’ without timing out your dashboards.

Sometimes I look at my old SQL code and genuinely have no idea what I was thinking. I realized this again today while reading an article on SQL tips by Metabase. In the article they mentioned the importance of adding tiny notes with your code. It reminded me how important it is to add comments, even when the code feels easy in the moment. Months later, it’s never as clear as we think. Leaving simple notes for yourself makes it so much easier to revisit projects, prepare for interviews, and explain your work confidently.
