Join us for our #ClimateWeekNYC webinar: From Planting to Performance: The Crucial Role of Monitoring in Green Infrastructure for Climate Resilience, where we will explore the critical need for robust monitoring in green infrastructure projects and how the absence of data is limiting the adoption of these nature-based solutions. About us
After more than a decade of leading the charge in how the New York metropolitan region views and uses its harbor, and with more than 1,000 Alliance Partners committed to bringing real change to our region’s 700+ miles of coastline, in 2019 the Waterfront Alliance stepped into a new and critical leadership role to define New York Harbor’s response to sea level rise and coastal storms. Our crucial, long-term focus on increasing waterfront accessibility for all, along with our efforts to advocate for a working waterfront that is a vital source of business activity and well-paying jobs and educating the next generation of waterfront stewards, continue as essential pillars of our work to create a well-adapted and resilient New York Harbor. Together, we build, transform, revitalize, and protect accessible waterfronts for all communities.

Ahead of the ceremony, we sat down to speak with Atkins to speak about how he runs his business model in the maritime sector, how he was introduced to Waterfront Alliance, the challenges that he's encountered during his career such as COVID-19, and more! "It’s my 40th year in the industry and I can honestly say that I’ve never lived the same day twice. That variety, that excitement gets you up in the morning, it gets your feet on the floor and keeps you moving, every single time." says Atkins on working in the maritime industry. The Waterfront Alliance is honored to recognize John Atkins, a 39-year veteran of the maritime industry, as a 2025 Heroes of the Harbor. Atkins played a pivotal role in negotiating a long-term lease agreement with the Port Authority of NY and NJ, ensuring the stability and growth of both terminals for decades to come. Atkins currently serves as CEO of Port Liberty Terminals, where he oversees the daily operations of two container terminals in New York and New Jersey. We are incredibly excited to honor Atkins for his deep and longstanding commitment to regional commerce and sustainable waterfront development. The latest public comment opportunity for the New York-New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Study (HATS) was focused on three "actionable elements," which include projects along the Harlem River (Manhattan), Oakwood Beach (Staten Island), and the New Jersey Meadowlands. 27 members of the Rise to Resilience Coalition weighed in ahead of the August 25 deadline. We applaud the Corps for incorporating natural and nature-based features in Oakwood Beach and NJ Meadowlands. We also urge the Corps to clearly outline a phased implementation strategy that delivers near-term benefits to the most at-risk communities.
