About us
The NDDOT is an innovative and progressive organization. We have a great team of employees that work hard to carry out the Department’s mission to safely move people and goods. The NDDOT strives to build and maintain an efficient transportation system consisting of about 8,518 miles of roadway and 4,858 bridges. It oversees the development of surface transportation including highways, bridges, rail, transit, pedestrian and bicycle paths across the state. Annually, the Department processes over 1,000,000 vehicle registrations and serves over 500,000 licensed drivers at branch offices located across the state. The NDDOT’s Central Office is located on the North Dakota State Capitol Grounds in Bismarck and has eight District Offices across the state in Bismarck, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot, Valley City and Williston. In January 2018, NDDOT, North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), and the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH), launched Vision Zero to serve as the framework to guide all statewide traffic safety activity, including (but not limited to): 1. Widespread public education/outreach. 2. Working with the legislature to ensure state laws represent best practices in traffic safety. 3. High visibility enforcement of existing laws. 4. Technology advancements. 5. Infrastructure/road safety improvements Along with the support and action of these lead agencies, private sector stakeholders that share interest in traffic safety are critical partners in Vision Zero efforts. The Fargo District gathered this week to celebrate the career of Kent (center), who retired after a 34-year career at NDDDOT. We hope you enjoy your retirement, Kent - especially the lack of sub-zero temps and snow plows! #TeamNDDOT #SelfiesFromTheField

NDDOT is accepting applications for Special Road Fund (SRF) projects. SRF projects are limited to roads that provide access to and/or are within recreational, tourist, and historical areas. The intent of this program is to help finance highway projects identified by political subdivisions, tribal governments and state agencies which typically have some funding but need additional help. We are now soliciting counties, cities, state agencies, and tribal governments for applications for projects that will be built in 2026 or 2027. Application deadline is Nov. 30. Visit dot.nd.gov/srf for full information. #NDRoads #SpecialRoadFund

Technology has come a long way over the years, not only in computers and cell phones, but in snowplows as well. Back in the mid-1900s, snowplows didn’t have the traction they do now, so operators would connect two trucks together. The lead truck was equipped with a plow, and the rear truck provided additional power. When Marvin Lang, a veteran NDDOT plow operator, was hired in the late 1950s, plowing was a two-man operation. One person would drive, and the other would operate the plow. Sometimes the secondary roadways across the state would go unplowed for long periods, forcing farmers to revert to horse and buggy travel or put chains on their tractor wheels. Today, the NDDOT has about 350 snowplows and snow-removal tools across the state, clearing more than 17,000 lane miles. These plows are equipped with high-tech operating systems that help operators safely and efficiently remove snow from roadways and keep the traveling public moving year-round. Ready to be a part of NDDOT’s snowplowing legacy? Go to dot.nd.gov and submit your idea to our annual Name-a-Plow contest before it closes Nov. 21. #ThrowbackThursday #NameAPlow #NDRoads

This plow has one job… but zero identity. Help us out—give it a name before winter shows up! Submit your ideas at dot.nd.gov/name-a-plow #NDRoads #NameAPlow

Seven roads and bridges were named in honor of fallen North Dakota soldiers in the most recent legislative session. We're proud to honor these individuals today and every day. Thank you to all who served, and let's take a moment today to thanks those who made the greatest sacrifice. #VeteransDay #NDRoads
