About us
The National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA) is the largest organization within the U.S. dedicated to educating and representing members within the onsite and decentralized industry. Our members include educators, regulators, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and other parties in the protection of North America’s water resources and environment. All segments of the industry are represented on NOWRA’s Board of Directors that provide broad perspectives to promote and sustain our industry and service to the public. NOWRA headquarters is located in Westford, Massachusetts, with local constituent groups throughout the U.S. and Canada. NOWRA was founded in 1992 to educate and serve its members and the public by promoting sound federal, state, and local policies, to improve standards of practice, and increase public recognition of the need for and benefits of onsite and decentralized wastewater infrastructure. Decentralized systems provide effective and more affordable wastewater treatment solutions where traditional central sewerage systems might be impractical or unsuitable. These systems can sustainably serve a single home, a neighborhood, or an entire community including commercial and industrial facilities.

Congratulations to Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Technology Center (MASSTC) on the grand opening of the Clean Water Center!
On Friday, I had the privilege of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Barnstable County Clean Water Center at the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) in Sandwich, MA. The new facility is truly impressive—every detail has been thoughtfully designed to advance innovation in clean water solutions. The event was attended by Congressman Bill Keating, State Senator Julian Cyr, David Lentz from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Kristen Sarri from The Nature Conservancy, and James Byrnes from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Innovation Institute. It was hosted by Brian Baumgaertel and the talented MASSTC team, who have done incredible work bringing this vision to life. The Clean Water Center will serve as a hub for research, collaboration, and solutions to one of our most pressing environmental challenges. I’m excited to see the impact it will have locally, nationally, and globally. 💡 Septic System Myth-Busting for SepticSmart Week 💡 There are a lot of misconceptions about septic systems, and believing them can be costly for homeowners. Let’s clear a few up: 🚫 Myth 1: If my drains are flowing, my system must be fine. ✅ Truth: Problems often start underground and may not show up until it’s too late. Regular inspections are the only way to know your system’s health. 🚫 Myth 2: “Flushable” wipes are safe for septic systems. ✅ Truth: Even if labeled “flushable,” wipes don’t break down like toilet paper. They can clog pipes and damage your system. 🚫 Myth 3: Septic tanks never need to be pumped. ✅ Truth: All septic tanks need pumping—typically every 3–5 years—to remove solids and keep the system working properly. Staying #SepticSmart saves money, protects your property, and keeps our environment healthy. 🌎💧 #SepticSmartWeek #Wastewater #SepticSystems
