For two weekends in August, we shut down the 4/5/6 lines through Manhattan that carry over a million people per day. There is never a great time to shut it down, but if there were a good time, it’d be weekends in August (ridership is as low as it ever gets). During the outage, our primary purpose was track and switch replacement, but we took the opportunity to make as many repairs as we could. Our crews were active along the entire line, working on the upcoming ADA project at 86 St, long structural repairs between 125 St and Grand Central, early survey work for eventual underground cell service near 14 St-Union Square, and more. All of this “bonus” work is a result of working together to treat every moment of a service outage as a precious resource. Thank you for your patience and thank you for riding with us. Last summer, we shut down the G line to begin replacing century-old signals with state-of-the-art Communications-Based Train Control technology. But that work isn’t quite done yet. We just finished another round of weekend outages to facilitate the transition to CBTC. During that time, we pulled about 19 miles of cable in place along the Crosstown Line to send and receive the new signals. Much of the rest of the work was track replacement, where we replaced wooden track ties with sturdier composite ties. We still have more work to do, but every phase is less disruptive than the last—and G riders will have their weekend service back for the rest of the summer! Last weekend, the 110 St-Central Park North subway station was officially renamed to 110 St-Malcolm X Plaza! During the event with Governor Kathy Hochul, NYCT President Demetrius Crichlow reflected on this historic moment for New York City Transit that honors the legacy of activist Malcolm X and celebrates Harlem's history and community.
