Adding solar energy saves school districts money and provides long-term budget stability. That was the message PEA Senior Manager of Policy and Strategic Partnerships Grace Hancock delivered at yesterday's press conference, hosted by PennEnvironment, alongside Office of PA State Representative Elizabeth Fiedler, Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson, PHILADELPHIA FEDERATION OF TEACHERS President Arthur Steinberg, and Solar States Founder Micah Gold-Markel. PEA served as a technical contributor on PennEnvironment's latest report, which finds that installing solar on Pennsylvania's schools could create more than $340 million in potential savings over the equipment's theoretical lifetime. In Philadelphia alone, installing solar panels at all 400+ schools would generate more than 123 megawatts of electricity. PEA envisions a future where more of our schools benefit from solar, reducing operating costs at a time when electricity costs are on the rise, while using on-site power to teach our students how they can join this growing industry. Solar on schools is a great way to lead by example and show students and their communities that clean energy saves money, produces non-polluting energy, and supports local, family-sustaining jobs.
