Curious about how we cracked the code on mapping crime risk in Brazil? Let’s just say it took the sharpest tools and boldest strategies to make it happen! The challenges: ➡️ Data Inconsistency: Brazil's crime data varies widely across different states and municipalities due to inconsistent reporting standards and methods, making it tough to create a unified picture. ➡️Underreporting of Crimes: Many crimes in Brazil go unreported due to distrust in law enforcement or fear of retaliation, which skews the data and affects the accuracy of the index. ➡️Lack of Transparency: Some regions have limited access to reliable public data as government agencies may not fully disclose crime statistics, complicating efforts to gather comprehensive information. ➡️Diverse Crime Types: Brazil faces a broad spectrum of criminal activities, from violent crimes to cybercrime, and capturing this diversity in a single index while weighting each appropriately is a significant challenge. ➡️Geographical Disparities: The vast size of Brazil and its regional differences mean that crime patterns vary greatly between urban and rural areas, requiring nuanced data collection and analysis to reflect these differences accurately. So how did we do it? We tackled these challenges by leveraging a combination of official crime data, advanced analytics, and local expertise to standardize and verify inconsistent or incomplete data. We also incorporated alternative data sources and adjusted for underreporting through statistical modeling to create a more accurate and comprehensive crime map. Want to know more about PCI Brazil? The narrative surrounding Washington D.C.'s crime landscape is complex, and like all locales, crime ebbs and flows over time. In the fall of 2022, we posted a Crime Risk Snapshot highlighting the Pinkerton Crime Index risk scores for 10 of the city’s more than 70 museums. The data painted a picture of total crime risk at these cultural hotspots ranging from 1.6x to 4.8x—for context, scores are multiples of the country’s median score or 1.0x. A score of 2.0x is twice the risk, 0.5x half the risk, and so on. Fast forward to August 2025—what’s new the score? Has the crime risk narrative changed since 2022? Crime stats reveal the story under the headlines. Our data dives deep into these changes so you don’t have to. Swipe below to compare the crime risk scores from August 2022 through 2025 to see what’s changed and by how much. Know your risk. Be safe. The late 1800s weren't just about Wild West outlaws. While Pinkerton’s name is often tied to frontier escapades, our operatives were also hot on the trails of savvy forgers and counterfeiters like Charles Becker, the notorious "Prince of Forgers," who operated from 1872 to 1895. Becker, with unmatched forgery skills, was a master at transforming mere dollars into small fortunes, his gangs and identity shifting as quickly as his elaborate scams. His most audacious act—also his curtain call—was A $22,000 bank swindle in San Francisco in 1895. With determination and flair, Pinkerton agents pursued Becker inexorably, finally orchestrating a dramatic capture on Newark’s bustling streets. His subsequent trial and retrial were equally captivating, reducing his life sentence to seven years. After his 1903 release, a seemingly reformed Becker returned to Brooklyn. It was repeatedly alleged that Becker received a $500/month annuity or pension paid by the Agency and the American Bankers Association, so long as Becker kept out of trouble and did not cause any problems for them. Of course, it was adamantly denied by all parties involved. Meanwhile, he found work as an informant, codenamed "Gardenstone," at New York racetracks for Pinkerton's Racing Services. Robert A. Pinkerton (second-gen Pinkerton leader) trusted his reform, noting Becker’s desire for an honest life. Yet, William Pinkerton (Robert’s brother and co-leader) was ever the realist, waiting for Becker to prove his newfound honesty, albeit with a watchful eye, ready to act if old habits resurfaced, recalling that Becker’s conviction was the hardest fought. Ultimately, Becker stayed true, living peacefully until September 9, 1916, when he passed away naturally at home.
