An international non-profit organization working to create a better future for people and nature

About us

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 60 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests. We are building an alliance to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. By bringing diverse allies together we are making deep-rooted change on some of our most pressing social and environmental issues. Together, we amplify the voices of farmers and forest communities, improve livelihoods, protect biodiversity, and help people mitigate and adapt to climate change in bold and effective ways. Join our alliance. Our alliance is all about changing the way the world produces, sources and consumes. Every company has the power to help build a better future by sourcing commodities responsibly and adapting its business model to become more sustainable. By joining us, you are helping meet the increase in demand for responsibly made products. And when the demand is there, farmers and foresters work hard to meet it, helping drive real, meaningful impact. Everyone wins when we bring the right people together. The Rainforest Alliance has recently merged with UTZ, a Netherlands-based program and label for sustainable farming worldwide. • The Rainforest Alliance is deeply concerned about the catastrophic flooding across Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, which has already claimed more than one thousand lives, with hundreds still missing, and millions displaced. We are closely monitoring the devastating situation and its impact on communities—as well as on our staff and partners in the region. We have taken safety measures and remain in close contact with our teams on the ground. Within our certification programs, delays in scheduled activities and exports are expected in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, as local certification bodies are unable to travel until conditions and road access improve. We are exploring how to best support our local partners during this time. We wish safety and strength to our staff, partners, and the affected communities. • Last week in Geneva, we explored emerging solutions to global human rights challenges at the United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights. 🌍 Here's what resonated most with our mission at the Rainforest Alliance: 🌱 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗗𝗘𝗜) 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Inclusive workplaces are essential for productivity, resilience, and human dignity. Achieving this requires capacity building, culturally grounded approaches, and companies willing to lead—even amid political volatility. 🌱 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. Workers often lack awareness of mechanisms or trust in using them. Effective systems must be people-centered, accessible, multilingual, and co-designed with workers. Real progress happens through prevention and risk mitigation, while grievance mechanisms should remain the last resort. 🌱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀-𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. Free, prior, and informed consent is not a checkbox, but a right tied to land, culture, and self-determination. Indigenous-led monitoring, tailored human rights due diligence, and long-term partnerships are essential. 🌱 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲 (𝗔𝗜) 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. From mapping deep supply chains to detecting risk patterns, AI offers new opportunities for earlier detection and proactive action. But technology must reinforce—not replace—rightsholder-led processes, human judgment, and accountability. Across all sessions, one message was clear: human rights due diligence must be people-centered, context-driven, and collaborative. No single actor can address structural challenges alone. We look forward to working with partners across sectors to put people and nature at the heart of business! 🤝 #RainforestAlliance #HumanRights #BizHumanRights #DueDiligence #BusinessAndHumanRights

  • This simple truth is at the heart of healthy food systems—and it’s farmers who put it into practice every single day. 🌱 Despite the mounting climate and economic challenges they face, smallholder farmers grow one-third of our global food supply. As we gather around the table today, let's remember the hands that grew the food we eat, all while nurturing the soil, protecting biodiversity, and sustaining the communities and ecosystems we all rely on. Thank you to the farmers who care for the land—and, by extension, all of us. 🌏 #SmallholderFarmers #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSystems #Thanksgiving #RainforestAlliance

  • Sustainability conversations were blooming at the Global Floral and Produce Show in Anaheim, California last month! 🌸 During a panel session, our colleague Kelsey Ray joined other industry leaders to discuss how sustainability standards are shaping the fresh produce and floral sector—from the importance of transitioning to regenerative agriculture to how standards can help drive that shift. Key takeaways from the event include: 🌱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, and the entire supply chain must share the responsibility of making the transition. 📊 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮. And as an industry, we must work together to improve how we collect and share data along the supply chain. 🌿 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀—like the Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Standard—𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 for sustainability across supply chains and support their transition to more regenerative practices. When the industry comes together, we can make real progress toward a more sustainable, regenerative future. 💪 International Fresh Produce Association #RainforestAlliance #FloralAndProduceShow #Sustainability #RegenerativeAgriculture

  • Earlier this month, we joined the Nestlé Germany Stakeholder Workshop 2025 in Frankfurt, an event that brings partners together around one shared purpose: advancing more sustainable and resilient food systems. During a presentation and two World Café sessions, our colleagues Christian Hohlfeld and Filiz A. shared insights from the Rainforest Alliance’s SABAL Project in India, highlighting how multi-stakeholder landscape approaches can help address the complex, interconnected challenges facing people and nature. Here's what stood out to us from these sessions: 🌿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 is the foundation of every meaningful collaboration—but it takes time, patience, and the right structures to grow. 🌍 Success depends on 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 🌾 True transformation happens when we 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 and single supply chains, act across sectors, and focus on the real-life challenges of people and ecosystems on the ground. These discussions are key in shaping the future of sustainable, equitable food systems—and we’re proud to help drive that momentum forward! 💪 #RainforestAlliance #Nestle #Workshop #India #ClimateResilience

  • 🌱 Bringing regenerative agriculture into focus means looking beyond individual farms—and that’s exactly what the new LandScale Regenerative Agriculture Assessment Lens is designed to help us do.👇 Last week at the Sustainable Agriculture Summit in Anaheim, California, we joined partners from across the agricultural, corporate, non-profit, and research sectors to launch this new resource—designed to help strengthen regenerative outcomes at the landscape level. Truly regenerative systems depend not only on farm practices, but also on the landscapes that support them. Water, biodiversity, governance, community well-being, and supply resilience are all shaped across the wider landscape—and the Assessment Lens helps us understand and monitor that bigger picture. Co-developed with the Rainforest Alliance, Regen10, The Nature Conservancy, Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, and the Sustainable Food Trust, the Assessment Lens brings together practical indicators to track regenerative progress across entire regions. During the event, speakers emphasized that effective landscape-scale collaboration requires shared power, strong community leadership, aligned goals, and coordinated action. The conversation made one thing clear: pairing farm-level efforts with landscape-level insight makes regeneration more impactful, benefiting people, nature, and supply chains alike. With the Assessment Lens now launched, LandScale and partners are working with early adopters to pilot its use across U.S. agricultural landscapes, helping refine and scale the approach for broader global use.
